The average player doesn't "go fast" - they clumsily stumble through levels bumping into walls, falling down pits because speed in a 2D platformer isn't actually a good gimmick. They have their place but they're not actually pure "fun" like Mario, they're awkward, they also have a habit of blowing their level design load in the first 2 stages then the rest of the game is boring and bland. Tbh Sonic was a cool gimmick in the 90s but it hasn't aged well.
