America is a country that has amassed enormous quantities of capital and that capital must flow. While flowing, it generates a lot of revenue. Even if you consider that allowing China get into the WTO and having free trade with Mexico and Canada were very much political decisions, if you had managed to keep all that lost manufacturing power in the U.S., the cost of goods and services would've been higher today (although salaries too).
