There is a lot of statistics here, which is related to science. And this has been analysed in many fields including law: beautiful people get shorter sentences if at all found guilty. For ugly people it is curtains.

As for why, that is closer to psychology, but long story short, humans are still primitive beings where judments are made on flimsy basis.
