no, really. what is a set?
>>
A collection of items. At some point they even stop caring about the items. A set is a collection of sets. Von Neumann sets are real dope shit.

>A collection of items
define collection
define items
>>
>>16389203
This is math not philosophy. A set is a collection of items is a correct mathematical definition.

a set is a kategory, and almost all words a kategorys or functions, im jsut saing

It's like a collection of reps, bro. As in repetitions of whatever exercise you're doing, bro.

DEFINITION: a set is a collection of objects/elements.

In the mathematical context, these objects are typically numbers.

Sets, elements, membership etc are taken to be primitive notions that cannot reduced to simpler notions. They are our starting point in the foundations of mathematics.

OP was obviously asking it in a philosophical set you calculator fiddling autist.
>>16389195
What a set means, is that the idea of a "category" for an object is hardwired in your brain. The way your brain parses sensory stimulus and turns the environment into recognizable objects is a biological process, not a rational one.
>>
>this thread again
Time for OP to be pedantic as fuck about every single little word always asking for a "definition" for everything.
>>16389203
Case in point.
>>
>>16389200
A collection of well defined items. For example collection of tall hoes is not a set because tall is not a well defined term. However, a collection of hoes over 5'10" is a set because the height criteria is well defined now.

The trick to expose these peoples is not to keep asking them to define things, but to solve simple questions.
>>16389781
Are sets themselves objects/elements?
If so, is the collection of all sets a set?
>>16390033
Is a set a well defined item?
If so, is the collection of all sets a set?
>>
>x is a set
>x = x
these are two ways to say the same thing
hope this helps
here is another way of expressing this
define
>x is a set
to be equivalent to the expression T where T is a propositional constant such that T, i.e. T holds, T is true, and so on
in other words, everything is a set
