WE GAAN
C'mon space boys.... it's already 2023..
Can screw dragon now land propulsively or is that only for cargo dragon?
Fuck we're already at flight 5? I barely remember what happened the previous 4 flights.
>>16424354You reckon SpaceX buys hardware from Rocketlab or others?
>>16424354God I hate coastal humidity. I'm not even hungry but I might hang out at the dennys until closer to launch just to get away from the soup air.
>>16424363coastal humidity is good wish I lived in Hawaii
>>16424362well their parachutes used to come from a subcontractor but spacex bought them when their business started failing and they continued making dragon parachutes as a part of spacex.i'm sure they have a few small subcontractors here and there, but whatever they do have is likely close to their dragon/falcon/starship manufacturing facilities.
>sparks are flying at starbase pipesis welding going on?
>>16424361Flight 1: Blew up the pad, free falling without self destructFlight 2: Successful hot stage, booster immediately blows up and upper stage loses contact with ground before reaching spaceFlight 3: Booster survives and crashes into water at the speed of sound, upper stage burns up on reentry with really cool plasma effects on cameraFlight 4: Booster successfully slows to a soft touchdown on the water, upper stage miraculously survives to a soft touchdown in the indian ocean with a lot of damage
>>16424368Flight 5: going for Booster Catch, verifying that Heat Shield Tile 2.0 is good enough.
>>16424366So they are now bailing out unprofitable failing companies?? LOL. They're no different from the government now. It's over for innovation at SpaceX.
>>16424368yeah, all great succesfull test flights, can't wait to see this one pushing the program forward even more.
>>16424368Thanks for the quick rundown
>>16424372>bailing outno they've absorbed them so they don't have to waste their own time building the expertise to make parachutes.kinda like a big slimegirl absorbing me after rape and turning me into a part of her.
i hope the anon that usually does launch threads makes it early enough to catch most of the flood.

>>16424362its certainly possible, depends what the cost and reliability etc isSpaceX has made a lot of stuff in house because the aerospace contracting has been full of massively inflated costs + they can make sure its reliable
>>16424368Oh yeah, and IFT-3 had an uncontrolled spin that doomed the upper stage

I’m amazed how easily everyone accepts the re-branding of Starship test failures as successes. BTW, re-usable Starship in its current form isn’t happening; at best it’ll be semi-reusable like Falcon.9 (which they also attempted to make fully re-usable). It’ll basically becone Shuttle 2.0 before it’s fully reusable. People don’t seem to understand just how far full re-usability is for Starship. Making it re-usable means they have to RELIABLY land it fully without accidents with pin-point accuracy, and they’re just now figuring out how to not have a catastrophic failure after sending 0.00kg of payload into orbit.

>>16424385Every program builds upon failures. Every single one that will ever exist.Sometimes failure tests are even necessary to get answers for critical safety and other performance criteria.>ok the engine works, so what happens when the whole thing blows up at the pad?>ok it lifts off, so what happens when it all blows early flight>ok it flies, what happens at mid altitude>ok, how about vmaxetc and etcthis is why new product R&D is more expensive than employee pay
>>16424385If they can actually bring that giant booster back to land that'll be a big accomplishment
>>16424368https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0chNUPiUrfQ>Starship Development Montage (William Tell Overture)
>>16424385so you're saying it's no reusable because they have both reusable and ablative heatshields?

>>16424368https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jz5qrG98bWs>IFT 1 vs IFT 2 vs IFT 3 vs IFT 4 | Side by Side Comparison and Analysis
>>16424385the point of the tests are not to complete the final intended flight envelope of starship perfectly in one go, it's to get as far as possible, see what breaks, and iterate on design.finding something that breaks is therefore part of a succesful test campaign.that you wish desperately to cope about this is irrelevant to the matter. spacex will continue doing this, oblivious to your whining, and will "fail" closer and closer to mars until they're "failing" in their 20 million person colony to build the new megadome on time, and if you're alive by that point, you'll still be here, complaining.
If they go through with the catch attempt I expect it to go pretty much perfectly, but I think they're going to call it off during boostback
>>16424406I'll bet you something burns a little too much for a successful landing.
>>16424401i don't think so. raptor 3 i think will start being used on the V2 ships.
You did beat all 20 levels, right?
>>16424401on IFT-7 with Starship V2
digits and it will be so succesful that nasa itself makes a decreet order to change Europa Clipper from FH to Starship flight 6 saving 5 years of transit time. Yeeeeha cowboy (im having a nervous breakdown)
>>16424409I beat 1 level
>>16424399It’s not reusable because they can’t RELIABLY return both the booster and vessel to a landing pad. Just demonstrating the booster returning isn’t good enough, that’s old hat. Somehow getting the ship down within 6km of the landing pad isn’t anywhere near good enough. Even if it could be landed fully and accurately once still isn’t good enough; they would have to demonstrate doing so regularly / reliably. Same thing goes for the Raptors — it’s fine to scramble to get a set of the very best engines for the purpose of a test, but that’s not good enough for production — if they need to fly frequently, it’ll be a major problem if only the most perfect engine samples can be used and only have a few fail per flight.

How many attempts did it take for Saturn V to get to orbit?
V1 vs V2 nosecone differences (both under constant iteration though)
>>16424423Fucking pencil rocket, going conservative with the width of the rocket was the biggest mistake they have done.
>>16424423r the grid fins and bottom flaps bigger on v2?
https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1845366571042025690
>>16424423It's good that it's taller at least from an aesthetics point of view.
>>16424419Nah, Elon just wanted to get paid — and he did (Starshield). Ironically, the Russians are now “stealing” the service via grey / black market receivers and Starlink apparently can’t figure out how to stop that. So the US government is paying Starlink to provide a military data service to Ukraine which has been hijacked by the Russian military, now.
>>16424425i did but i'm not proud for giving up.

>>16424444still part of the apollo program
>>16424444the Saturn PROGRAM began with SA-1 test development. All Saturn-V parts are identical with other Saturn test vehicles, in full configuration. Please do note, the Saturn program only had 1 failure and that was one of the more final, complete variants after over 25 successful launches without failure.
>>16424452>the Saturn program only had 1 failurewhat was the failure.
>>16424454your father was absent when you needed to get smacked on the head
>>16424368Dunno why, but I feel weirdly confident about this mission. All the major phases of flight have been succesful one way or another. The booster has shown that it can at least get to where the chopsticks are, and they've tested the actual movement.Honestly what can go wrong desu? Screencap this.
>>16424458it was my personal belief that the major limit on how accurate falcon can be is the fact that it has to come down as fast as possible to prevent it's TWR from making it take off again.starship's much more lenient timing should allow it to get accurate enough.
are they gonna do some cool new shit with ship like righlight in space or maybe door opening?
>>16424426The Saturn V program had a bigger budget
>>16424391huh why are there so many people that think the landing attempt will be aborted during boostback?
>>16424458Chopsticks moving too slow, chopsticks woobling too much because they move too fast, engines shitting itself, catch points being not strong enough.
Serious question; how are encounters faster than Hohmann transfers plotted out? I know Hohmann transfers are the most fuel-efficient transfer, discounting wonky gravity boost stuff, but if you wanted to use, I dunno, twice the typical delta/v of a Mars Hohmann transfer, how much would that speed up the travel time, and when would that burn be done relative to a Hohmann transfer window? I've started thinking about this because I sent a probe on a Hohmann transfer to one of the outer gas giants in KSP outer planets mod and the thing won't arrive for *thirty five years*, and there's a lot of talk about using more powerful propulsion methods for shorter travel times to Mars and other places.
Imagine booster exploding on a tank farm
this is such a growly narrator
>>16424409game is very grainy for me and i wont try beating past lvl2
>>16424458this, 0.5cm accuracy
>>16424434>Ironically, the Russians are now “stealing” the service via grey / black market receivers and Starlink apparently can’t figure out how to stop that.sounds like delusional EDS truther shit
The real reason why the Saturn was a success is simply because the program was full of talented engineers. Today’s engineering teams….are not.
>>16424429why elon is launching this ugly v1 nosecone on this and next flight, if v2 is ready?

>>16424483truth is russia might've maybe gotten a few starlink kits working but it's pretty much irrelevant in the larger scheme of things. they're still committing national suicide by cop in ukraine regardless.
>>16424423kinda lost track of starship development for some months, any info about what version will be used for crewed starships? or will v3 be only used for starlinks and as tankers?
>>16424499my guess is after v2 has worked out more problems, v3 will incorporate the crewed version.
>>16424499No such information has been forthcoming. Version 3 is a vehicle on the path to realizing the target reusable baseline specification of at least 100 metric tons to orbit. We don't know much about what will be done for different payloads yet.
>>16424385You sound like you've never built anything in your life.
>>16424499>crewed starshipNever happening
>>16424458If the booster is healthy during boostback apparently the flight director will be responsible for giving a manual go command for catch. Imagine being that guy and waving that big bitch in. Hopefully we get some control room kino if things go well.
Considering recent f9 track record I don't have much hope of it going perfectly

>>16428058>BOING t-shirt (close enough)
>>16428399It has a liquid oxygen landing burn tank, and uses the propellant supply line and sump area for methane.

What does a reusable super heavy booster mean in terms of the economics of sending payloads to orbit?
We need to go to 2000 replies bros. Also where can I find more footage of the booster landing?
>>16428598Order of magnitude lower cost per kg to orbit than Falcon.

>>16428192They probably wanted to have a wide margin so it could hover for longer if necessary. Also, I'm not sure if there is a payload sim or what in Starship, but if it's not fully loaded then the booster won't use as much fuel lifting it.When they start carrying actual payloads and launching into higher orbits the booster will presumably have smaller fuel margins.
>>16424357Orbital Assembly rebranded to Above Space (https://abovespace.com/). Obviously, like most NewSpace companies, they realize after their funding round that they underestimated the time and cost of their project. Building a Von Braun wheel / mini Standford Taurus is still their long term goal but they are starting off with sending up pressurized satellite buses/capsules in orbit to generate revenue and to test technology. They state they want to send it up in Q4 2024 so there's a chance they are talking about fiscal year meaning late this year to early next year. Vast Space might beat them to artificial gravity though.
