Remember Sherlock: ‘My mind,’ he said, ‘rebels at stagnation. Give me problems, give me work, give me the most abstruse cryptogram or the most intricate analysis, and I am in my own proper atmosphere. I can dispense then with artifi cial stimulants. But I abhor the dull routine of existence. I crave for mental exaltation. That is why I have chosen my own particular profession, - or rather created it, for I am the only one in the world.’>The Sign of the Four, Arthur Conan Doyle, 1890.No, Sherlock, you are not; you have the infectious disease physicians for company.
>>16451314how do you guys find time to go on dates while in med school
>>16451457im a virgin
>>16451457>>16451762Same. The first boobies I've touched were from a cadaver, bro.
Do you guys reckon if I sleep around with staff it will affect my career?
Hello anons. I am a turd worlder med student who happens to be SPD/Autist. In typical turd world fashion, the med schools take in 5 times the students it can handle with the result that only the ones with charm/connection/bootlicking learn the skills to be a competent doctor. I will never be one of them because of my mental illness and will have to look at a different line of work after med school/basic training(you can be a GP here without a residency/MD). At this point I forgot why I typed this up because I'm pretty sure none of you guys have any useful advice for me, but I will post this just cause.
>>16451915Typical turd worlder: gives up before he's even had a go.This is why your country is shit.
why haven't you retards figured out how hiccups work yetisn't your entire fucking field just autistic occupation of the human bodyjesus christ this is like if mathematicians didn't have a concept of e
>>16451934But I did have a go. The charmers in my school have delivered babies and stitched up incisions and done proctoscopies while I havent even gotten the oppurtunity to learn how to put an iv cannula, despite having better scores than most and always being on time and doing every piece of curriculum work with as much diligence as I can muster. All this just because I cannot suck up to the residents/consultants or make small talk or whatever it is what the normies do to manipulate each other.
>>16452046That happens everywhere. My advice is embracing social alcoholism.
>>16452186Me dad was a social drinker (and obese) and he got cirrhosis out of nowhere (didnt find out till one day he was vomiting up blood). I think I will stay away from the booze. Besides turd worlders cannot metabolise alcohol like you white people do.
>>16452211Yo onions mexicano. You don’t know the fist thing about me pal.
>>16452319Man I wish. I am jeet.
What happens when you don't treat colon cancer? Will it be painful to die from it?Are there any abysmal effects besides dieing that might be worth seeking treatment for?

>>16452709I graduate in a month.
>friends are using me as a 24/7 free GP>barely talk to me except to ask about what their new dumb symptoms mean >even do the same for their own friends and demand I add them on discord to reassure them that they aren't dying of cancer or whatever >don't do the shit I ask them to do for me in return >put up with it because I'm so isolated and desperate for human interaction
>>16452709I'm an intern, finishing in 2 months but hopefully leaving clinical medicine after that because I can't do this shit no more.
My mom's "tingling" feet and fingers have now evolved into an obvious twitching and dizziness. She keeps scratching her arm and poking it because she thinks the dog keeps touching her abdomen. The dizziness and confusion have become noticeably worse over the past week, she thinks she has the flu so she stopped driving. She spends most of her time in a chair watching TV, sleeping, or eating KFC. Moderate incontinence. Does this sound like a major problem?
>>16453252kek, what a bitch. whenever people want a diagnosis and give me shitty symptoms, i just prattle on and on about shit no one cares about and maybe throw in a couple different diagnoses that ends in 'i dont know, go ask your doctor to run a bunch of tests'if you need human interaction, just post on /sci/ more or play vidya :^)
>>16452709how much of your day is just dealing with patients who were sent to you because they have a headache that isnt cured by NSAIDs/tylenol?
>>16453252Pretty weak display.I have a hard and fast rule that I do not answer people's medical questions when I'm not working. You need to be okay with being alone otherwise people will take you for a ride and you'll never grow as a person.
>>16453268Yes. She should see a doctor, Anon.At best, vitamin deficiency like thiamine or B12 or electrolyte derangement. At worst, stroke or dementia-related (assuming she's old). Ask the neuro resident lel.
>>16453284not too much, depends on what i'm doing that day but yes headache is a common complaint there's people who work headache clinics and all they do is headache which itself sounds like a headache to be frank
>>16451457You do have more free time than you think and there are other med students in the same boat. I know, it sounds cliche, but most medical folks tend to date other medical folks because they're the only ones that "understand" and have similarly wacky schedules. That being said, lots of people get married and even have kids while in Med School. Where there's a Will, there's way. It's actually when you'll have relative peace and quiet. Trying to do those during Residency is Hell for you and everyone around you who you are inconveniencing.
>>16453252This will NEVER end, Anon :/ No different than being a mechanic, or contractor. Any time you bring it up in Public, someone will say "Hey, can you take a look at.....?", "Why do you guys always....?", "I don't trust your kind.....". You can't do anything about friends and family, but don't bring it up when you're out and about unless you have to, then just say "Healthcare", that usually sounds boring enough to get folks to leave you alone.
>>16452782Trick question. You’re a midwit either way.
>>16453268Is she (pre) diabetic? Could be peripheral neuropathy, which is not good, but can be improved upon with physical therapy, exercise and the like, assuming she would do those in the first place. The diminished mental faculty and dizziness may be due to lack of oxygen to the brain. This can happen from being too sedentary, or for any number of cardio-pulmonary reasons. The problem is that the worse she feels, the less she will want to move, which will only make things worth. Check to see if there is any history of neuro disease in the family; Alzheimer's, dementia, etc...? If so, then there could be contribution factors other than poor lifestyle. If you can get her to a doc, even a GP, they can get a blood oxygen level (should be above 95%, but 98/99% is best), as well as her blood pressure and test her balance and reflexes using a light pen/hammer, etc..., This will at least tell you if she's in the "normal" ranges, if not, then you can proceed accordingly. Anything "neuro" you want to get on ASAP b/c we can't really "fix" or restore function once it's lost, but a little basic info will go a long way and won't require going to any sort of "specialist" initially. A good old fashioned "check up"/physical will tell you a lot.

Why is medical school a 4-year program? Why not stretch it out to 5 years or something so the pace is more relaxed?
>>164543827 years at university is more than enough thank you very much.
>>16454382slightly longer wouldnt be too bad if you could go right out of highschool like some other countries do instead of needing 4years at a useless undergrad
>>16454496>>16454580Technically, medical school is harder than it is in the past since there's more material covered but the length of medical school has stayed the same, right?
>>16454113I thought surgery was tiresome and has you standing for multiple hours. Not that I would really know. What do you like about it
>>16454665Hmmm not really. The focus has just shifted. Previously emphasis was more on clinical skills and examination, but now it's more on investigations and management.
>>16454700which was a huge mistake, but not a coincidencemanagement and investigations currently are so much more involved and complicated with guidelines that are ever expanding, yet patient outcomes are maybe only slightly better if at allwe do so much meaningless junk, it's insane to me hey, but as long as the public sector and the patients get their money sapped to pay for meaningless interventionsand as long as we can churn out cheap NP's and the like that just follow an algorithm without any clinical skillsand as long as big pharma makes money off useless drugshey, it all makes sense i guess
Yesterday I performed an epidural on a 6 year old. It wasn't successful so I slammed a laryngeal mask and then cried to myself at the corner of the OR. I think this Monday to Monday multiple jobs are taking a toll on me.
>>16454840how do you fail an epidural on a kid lol you can see their vertebrae through the skin
>>16454870obviously he closed his eyes and poked blindly
always feels weird to have a patient cry in your chair.
>>16454870I don't even know. I've placed multiple epidural on multiple kids. I used Dogliotti LOR test, the dose felt without any resistance on the 20cc syringe and even the catheter went out smooth. Did everything right.
>>16454697>Heavy integration of procedures>Have to actually understand mechanical placement of structures and relative anatomy instead of doing out medication to target "pathophysiology" (poorly understood void)>Attending on this rotation is an old guy who sounds like Gru and seems really scary at first sight but is really nice if you answer questions correctlyI even got to drive the camera on 2 lap operations yesterday. This guy is HPB focused which is apparently supposed to be the most annoying kind of gen surg rotation for med students, but I've actually been enjoying every operation so far
I can't stop having sex with the nurses.
I can't stop not having sex.
I can’t start having sex with the nurses.
>>16452046Everyone gets "really good grades", Anon. No one cares. They want to see that you are a "go getter" and "eager to learn". It's NOT their job to beg you to participate, or to give a cookie to every kids so nobody cries. Grow up. Take your profession seriously and get involved. You need to learn to be assertive and confident NOW, not when you're seeing your first patients alone in an office. Quit yer bitchin' and get in the game. You can learn to suture like a badass just using pig bellies. I've taught many a med student and resident to be as good as their instructors. It's not hard, you just have to practice and if you show with a few "cool" knots and closures under your belt, you will get major props from your peers and proctors. You can get suture kits on Amazon for $20, your hospital will give you all the blades and sutures you need and any grocery store butcher has pig skin, bellies or feet. No excuses.
>>16454148Nephrology is pretty cool, if you like the chemical side of medicine. I think "House" on the TV show was a nephrologist too.
>>164543824th year isn't so bad and mostly just job hunting. Better to get it over with. There is never going to be a "relaxed pace" once you get in the real world, so there' no sense in getting used to one in school.
>>16454665Not really. All the old/bad info is done away with and all the "basics" you learn in Medical School have stayed surprisingly common for decades, if not hundreds of years. You learn your specialty and "how to be a doctor" in residency. Med School is just for learning all of the lingo, the Top 200 diseases and the drugs to treat them combined with clerkships to see what specialty you might want to go into, but the basics of setting bones, birthing babies, taking histories and performing physicals hasn't changed much over the years.
>>16454697You get to "Fix" things in surgery, which is much more satisfying imo than throwing pills at a problem and hoping for the best. You also learn most of the medical side of things in addition to all the "coo" surgical/anatomical stuff, which you just have to have a natural interest in, I suppose. I'd rather stand for hours in an operatory than see hordes of infectious weirdos and dish out Z-packs all day, but to each their own.

>>16454939Well, actually, neuraxial anesthesia is one of the few procedures we do blindly. Most times without even a lumbar AP.
>>164527094th year DO applying neuro>are you gonna practice inpatient or outpatient? >fellowship?>do you get along with your co-residents?>do they call the midlevels "APPs"?>how long is the TnK window at your hospital?>how many of your patients are functional or fibromyalgia?
>>16454382because 3rd and 4th year are way easier than first two yearsin other countries, med school is 6 years (no undergrad)
>>16454665>medical school is harder than it is in the past since there's more material coveredmed school used to be mandatory attendance and anatomy was far, far more important. some med schools these days dont even have cadaver lab and/or have multiple choice practicals. also, no quizlet/anki/online resources. just booksthe rat race for getting your specialty of choice is much harder now though
Did your med school treat your entire final year as basically an unpaid internship where you work full days + overtime seeing patients and doing ward work alongside the doctors, and you also have no more lectures except for semi-informal tutorials during the working day but still have to write both theoretical and practical exams?I want to know if this is only a thing in my country or not.

>>16456271Attending told off this chronic pancreatitis s/p total panc patient few days ago for being addicted to opioids and finally discharged them with low-dose tramadol and just told them to do Tylenol/Advil as primary for pain. All labs totally stable, they had just been sitting on PO painkillers just complaining of unchanging epigastric pain for days (despite the entire point of the total panc being to wean them off the painkillers for the pancreatitis)Fast-forward to the next day, pt bounces back having forced themselves into DKA and gets right back on Dilaudid drip... >>16457732Go out for drinks with those dudes you're with.
Why are med people so 2dimensional and shallow? No one has hobbies other than traveling and food, there are no fun conversations to be had. I've had tons of friends before but med school was mega alienating, everyone is this psychopath without any interests, it's so demotivating
>>16457736I should just have a party involving the misfits of the school. But on the parties, there's one party involving 100+ people alone. I don't even know that many people lol.

Got an A+ in medical physiology and the doc offered me a spot in her anatomy class that learns through cadaver dissection. Will something like this make me competitive for med school if I have cadaver experience?
>>16459156I don't think the dissection experience itself will lend much to getting into med school, but it's good on your CV because it shows you're keen and intelligent. Try to get a job as a prosector and you'll be miles ahead with hand coordination for surgery.
>>16457738It's massive time sink when in school/res., and what little time you do have you have to actually get real world shit done, or sped it with your SO, or just fucking sleep. Docs tend to be "Type A", so they have hobbies are literally athletic (tennis, gym, golf, etc...). They can kill two birds with one stone that way by getting some exercise, "networking" with bros and having fun. Plus, once you start making a bit of money and have financial security becoming a "business person" is a lot more feasible and interesting, even fun. After about 10 years, you make more off investments than salary, so your interests become more business oriented, as well. It can be "fun" to "play" in real estate/stocks when you have a bit of "f-you" money. Not to mention the fact that you have to educate yourself on how money really works, or you'll lose it all to taxes. They do the "fun", but it's big kid, big money, "competitive" fun. These were the straight A's in EVERY class since Middle School kids. They're not really into "frivolity" so much as achievement and pushing themselves to reach a "Goal". I mean, tons people pay lots of money to climb Mt. Everest b/c they think it's "fun" too.
>>16459156Not really, simply b/c other kids don't have access to it, so it's a bit "unfair", but ABSOLUTELY TAKE THE CLASS!!!! A&P is super awesome and you will learn more in one semester of that class than 3-4 of most others. By the time you get to Med School, you'll likely be able to help lead disection in the Cadaver lab and they may ask you to help with prosections of limbs and things like that for closer study. This is also a good time to find out if you're squeamish, or not. The class can only help and will give you a bit of a leg up on others. Nothing earth shattering, but it can't hurt and it will show you're and eager beaver. You're likely to meet other cool nerdlings too.
So I have no friends in my school. I can't even cope with being an academic rockstar since I'm also in the bottom quartile. Help me, bros.
>>16459350Find them outside of school. Idk, find some hobby groups (I know, normie reddit advice), reconnect with old friends if you had someone worthwhile, hell even d*scord or 4chan can be okay. Med people are very status-oriented and their friendships are shallow. Most conversations are small talk and superficial shit. What can I say, medicine rarely attracts down to earth, interesting people. Maybe try talking to someone who looks like an outcast too

hello my medical friends
>>16463221yo, listen to this jam.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k85mRPqvMbE
on outer int, they are having a discussion about "repairing the mitochondria" and someone brought up transplants from animals, which made me think about the times when they used to try blood transfusions to humans but from animals, before. and they would try to do it in different ways, like with fresh blood, because they thought that was the issue. they also tried it with a few other species other than dogs and something like a cow or lamb. they gave the blood at room temp, but whats interesting was, how, they used a sort of saline to give IV fluids and hydration even in those days 300 years ago
>>16463222im listening to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuM15F_NqB8 crazy frog is based thoughits interesting how they used the low pitch noise, which i think is also slower. this is because the human brain wants to try to slow down for low pitch (or more like how it wants to speed up for high pitches). i dont want to talk about it, though, because its about music and not medicine. good song though
thats how the song gives its "aura" there was another term for the spirit inside of us but for the body and not head, too. that would of been good for people to have known
Monday i saw a bunch of sexy lawyers for 2 hours, and sat and looked at them walk around which to me was them being completely random as i wasnt a part of it. i passed a room where the NHS was doing something there, but it was for more like the "mental health" i guessi didnt go to the room on the first pass and when i went back there later i couldnt find the room which probably had shut its doors, but i wanted to talk to them to ask if i could help
>NHSwhat does hockey have to do with /med/?
i liked both the lawyer men and women. there was a woman there who looked like a bimbo but obviously she was very smart. there was another which had wide bottom trousers on, and they went over her shoes to the floor and hid her feets from me (not that i like feet). with her cloak on she looked beautiful. and another one who kept going past me only if i was looking (with her being there every day, and all of them probably talking, me being the weirdo guy) over and over, and walking really close to methere was this male lawyer with nice eyes. he looked like a layer - LOOKED like one! his eyes were like that of a hawks. and he actually sat next to me! there were open chairs, and he walked outside, as he was between tasks, and ACTUALLY sat next to me while he was on the phone, and put his arm on the bench backplate stretched out to me with his legs crossed i mean one crossed over the other
>>16463229i mean the National Health Service. they were doing some sort of aid for people where they didnt treat illnesses or disease but worries, and i didnt go there at first. i did try the second time because one of the MCAT books is now that mentul elf thing
and an update on the psychotherapist thing: they read my BMI (my height and weight), which i think is to do with them sneakily (everything psychologists do is sneaky) looking for a start to titration. i mention it because at that point i was *basically* fasting as i couldnt afford to eat food. i was slightly drunk though (not 500ml of vodka but half of a bottle of the big ones) its fun because i think that frame of reference for him helped, because it is alcohol, and he could see my reaction to it. Robbie Williams says that "everyone is a functional drunk" however and i just like to walk into dangerous things. i still dont think its too bad - if you have a job - to work for 2 hours, come home and have a little bit of spirits every night. i used 1L as a frame of reference but you wouldnt have to drink that much. it wouldnt be so bad to come home from a job and buy a bottle of alcohol every day
i dont think that its too fair to look at my BMI for my metabolism and trying to gauge what sort of effect the drug will have on me, for how long, and what is a safe dose. it doesnt matter how much - or how little - i eat, i will remain the same weight. also i can eat A LOT of food in one sitting, probably more than you can. i think i cap out at around a half a pound of red meat and a pizza - or 3/4 a 16 or 18 inch pizza doctor mike has made a video in the past about the flaws of BMI and its inaccuracies for when muscle is factored in, but the psychiatrist mentioned muscle wastage. the result that well i saw - losing a bit of a belly pouch and other negative body-image things, could of been what came out of my head translating the result from a loss of muscle to me being more satisfieda lot of doctors on YouTube (my only point of reference outside of my country) have trained their arms a lot, and seem proud of it. they recognize the health (and mind) benefits of working out, and i feel as though a lot of them went to the arms straight away, and worked on them, became proud of the results, and gained a more positive body-image
one thing also is - and i didnt say, just in case someone is watching, and would think id do it and that would then ruin my chances of getting actual help where i can get something that makes me me "more here," able to do things, be more solid and not weighted down - is that it would be fun to have a gf, put diazepines on my tounge, so that they melt, and then spit the goo and my spit into her mouthi bet it would be more readily absorbed and more bio-active, as well as being without any extended release they put in there i just think that it would be hot to spit in their mouth when one of those have dissolved into it already
i took a blood pressure tablet which someone gave to me randomlyi felt much more at ease and my nose started runningi dont even remember what i was scared about at that point in time what ive found helps me is to remember that. because in a year maybe i wont even remember what im scared of right nowfor the runny nose thing its a separate thing, which id like to know more about
oh and the FDA just denounced sudafed PE as "not being any more useful in removing sinus blockages than placebo"
i think that you all should start taking your own advice - and when you say, if you say that "if epinephrine was in everything like salt, it would be bad!" then you use your own argument and its logic to know that its not used in everything, and its unlikely that people would overdose (getting more than say 20mg of epinephrine a day) even if it was an OK drug to use, which it should be, to realize that, no, its not used in everything, thankfully so
because that would be ridiculous soo then take your own advice

>>16471580There are legitimate and very sad cases where the kids need help, but an overwhelming majority of the cases are:>snooty, rich, over dramatic teenager with an eating disorder who constantly interferes with her treatmentthey all hang out together too in efforts to sabotage their treatments>fetal alcohol/neonatal abstinence kid with oppositional defiant disorder or anger issues dropped off at peds ED by their foster parents>numerous edgy teenagers who were also dropped off at the peds ED by school counsellors after suspecting suicidal ideation, which the teen will always deny, but is now stuck in the psych ward because parents don't want to commit to bringing their kid to therapy or because the teen will flip-flop on having suicidal ideation for the attention>caregiver burnout with severe autism spectrum and down syndrome children>many teenage girls being screened for gender dysphoria and the family drama that comes with itBecause most psych drugs are still varied for safety in kids, most cases are entirely dependent on the child/teen's willingness and openness in speaking with the therapists for social skills training, CBT, family group discussion, and doing other activities, and with of the above cases, it rarely goes as planned. Many are frequent flyers as they are discharged with the parents promising to adhere to therapies but often fail at them. I miss internal med.

>>16471789:( nta but I've managed to stay out of the ward for 4.5 months
another day, more mistakes. soon, i will make less.
i have this thing sometimes where when i go from inhaling to exhaling, there's a soft "click" that seems to be coming from behind my nose. it's just one and only when i stop inhaling and start exhaling. it's also intermittent. it'll happen for maybe 15 minutes and then stop. i was hanging out with a friend and i noticed theirs did it to, so it's an audible thing.what could this be? i imagine it's like a flap or something snapping closed but i don't know the architecture of the breathing system.

What does a high TSH means? Non medecine fag here
>>16473894Hypothyroidism, roughly speaking. The thyroid isn't working as it should so your brain pumps more TSH to stimulate it.
