The 2nd company to land an orbital class booster is going to be Chinese, isn't it? Why did Jeff let pride get in the way of just making a Falcon 9 clone?
>>16550106Nooo
good morningwhat did I miss?
>>16550116>The 2nd company to land an orbital class booster is going to be Chinese, isn'tEh, it's not strictly impossible but I doubt itIn term of OFFICAL schedule, these are the current plans:>Deep Blue Aerospace Nebula 1, maiden launch+recovery NET Q2, but it's a relatively small launcher >Galactic Energy Pallas 1, maiden launch without recovery NET Q2, recovery attempt on 2nd or 3rd launch>Space Pioneer Tianlong 3, maiden launch without recovery NET May, focused on full capabilities for megaconstellation deployment for first 6 launches, so recovery attempt NET 2026>Landspace Zhuque 3, maiden launch without recovery NET July, recovery attempt on 2nd launch, they want to recover it before end of year>CASC-SAST CZ-12A maiden launch likely with recovery NET H2>CAS Lijian-2, Interstellar Glory Hyperbola 3 and Space Epoch Yuanxingzhe all aim for the very end of the year and are unlikely to launch this year, only Hyperbola 3 and Yuanxingzhe want to attempt landing on 1st launch. All of these are on the usual schedule risks although CZ-12A, as a chinese government-led project, generally has a more reliable timeline.Only Deep blue aerospace has very slim odds of beating NG unless they fuck up on 2nd landing. but their rocket is closer in size to New Shepard than New Glenn
So what orbit did they finally achieve?
>>16550123MEO
S1 Speed vs time NG vs F9 ASDS (current) vs StarshipFor now, the separation speed is not higher than on F9, but given the overall architecture of the launcher (S1/S2 mass ratio ~5-6 vs 3.5-4 on F9) we can expect them to aim for faster separation on future flights, when they have a better understanding of the launcher's margins.

I still don't get the usecase for NG besides Kuiper which isn't even ready.
From a viewer's POV it was a pretty rubbish launch>low TWR liftoff>can't see anything other than the plumes from external cams>few onboard camera views and those that were shown were low quality/FPS>after a certain point just showed telemetry>booster RUD'd off camera>timeline got stuck on entry burn for a while>"so close to landing">25km up>low-energy crowd>hooray we got to orbit. You can tell because the numbers on the screen stopped increasing! Also it felt to me like the commentary was trying to take a more of an early-Starship-launches kind of stance by implying that any progress beyond liftoff would be a big success. But the difference is New Glenn was built to be 100% successful from the get-go, and yet the booster didn't land. And it wasn't even a case of it being slightly off-target or whatever - the booster failed well before the landing burn

Two more BE-4s would do the trick, and even though it would burn through its propellant reserves that much faster, the gravity losses would be cut so much that it'd probably be higher and going faster at staging.
low TWR is fine and optimal actuallyas you burn fuel it goes upYou can't go fast to start anyways because of dense low altitude air
>>16550426Even with a max payload a Delta IV Heavy had a TWR of about 1.2, and that was a rocket that was notorious for sluggish takeoffs. Blue needs to find a way to squeeze more thrust out of those engines
>>16550431That's not how any of that works. The lower your thrust to weight ratio is, the more of your total Delta-V capacity is spent fighting the constant force of gravity. Below a ratio of, I want to say 1.2, you are losing delta-V to insufficient thrust.

https://x.com/spacecoastwest/status/1879796642674782428>Looks like Blue Origin may have experienced a BE-4 RUD during the Exoatmospheric Deceleration Burn (Entry Burn). From camera views, the burn was about 15 seconds shorter than expected, and the engines were not decelerating the booster much at all. The hue of the engine burn does not match that of ascent. It appears to be a fuel-rich combustion rather than the OXrich it is designed for.>This would explain why they were not performing as expected. The LOX tank on New Glenn is in the bottom like Super Heavy, and based on the animation, there is quite a dramatic (and unrealistic) flip prior to the entry burn. My guess is that this could have led to fuel slosh and oxygen starvation, which in return destroys the turbopumps leading to an engine RUD.>This might not be correct at all, but based on my analysis, this might be what led to the loss of “So You are Telling Me There’s a Chance”.

why yes i believe i can totally diagnose a guy based on his twitter posts
Hide bait posts, ignore bait posters. The differences in design philosophy between Starship and New Glenn are interesting to see at liftoff. The BE-4 is designed for a lower chamber pressure, and Blue decided to keep the engine count down. The result is a rocket that takes its time getting off the pad. Starship, by comparison, can't have enough chamber pressure or enough thrust, and can't get off the pad fast enough.

>>16550612alright. tell me how is his behavior beneficial? what kind of 12d chess is elon playing that pretending to be a god gamer by buying accounts boosted to the top of the leaderboard and then streaming, displaying complete lack of knowledge of even the most basic game mechanics, thus making himself a laughing stock, then doubling and tripling down while lashing out at his supporters, acting like an insecure lolcow, how does this get us to mars faster? i still support elon, i still support spacex, i am still optimistic spacex will get to mars. i just think if elon put his autistic obsession into accelerating as much as possible, he could at the very least have already achieved a starship moon landing if not already made a mars attempt this cycle
>>16550622His H1B meltdown stuck around. I'm an Elon slobber all the way, but he is rapidly losing favor with people that would love him if he stopped fucking up
>>16550619>the video games Elon playsRather the video games he has interns play for him.
>>16550613The procurement was for a service and so was launcher agnostic, no? Regardless of what the expectations of some people at NASA were, apparently the money was sufficient to let SpaceX develop an in-house big rocket. And since NASA gave them that money as a procurement rather than equity, it means the taxpayer doesn't own the rocket whose development they were the main funder of.
employedfag here, can I get a QRD on the Bezos launch? Did the rocket come back and land?
>>16550562Sure, if it can discover materials useful for making TPS tiles or rocket engine components (I doubt it's useful for anything)
>>16550629Yep, first American rocket to land the first stage.
>>16550585I'm just disappointed Elon didn't call him Asmongloid or repost the comparison to Cyraxx
>>16550629It blew up and the ship. TWR of 1.06. Im not gonna sugarcoat it… its bad
>>16550631first American rocket to reach orbit*that's why it's new GLENN after all
>>16550625I don't care what video games he plays, I'm paying attention to the roggets.Incidentally some random anon turned me on to Spirit of the North yesterday and I've been enjoying it quite a bit. You probably don't care though, which is how I feel about Elon's gaming.
we're on the cusp of making it to mars, or are we?
>>16550628>apparently the money was sufficient to let SpaceX develop an in-house big rocketNo, it was sufficient to develop dragon. It had nothing to do with falcon.
>>16550638Total crash course out of Earth
>>16550629The rocket successfully lifted off and staged, and the second stage carried the payload into orbit. The first stage seems to have had a major engine failure during the entry burn, and the stage crashed into the water at high speed.
>>16550638We're at this weird middle ground where there's a vehicle in development that could feasibly haul enough mass to Mars to build a city, but even getting boots on the ground right now would be a challenge.
>>16550638Two more years, tard.
>>16550645The human components of the Apollo program occupied a disproportionate part of the development time and budget.
>>16550638>we're on the cusp of making it to mars, or are we?the answer will depend on ai. if things go well we will have self replicating robots on mars this decade. if not we will never make it>>16550636if you dont care why did you reply?
>>16550645I should start reading the Red/Blue/Green Mars trilogy again, I never finished the second book but the first one was cool.
I wish to see Bezos rocket land
>>16550648You keep bringing it up every day like I should, I'll keep reminding you that I don't. >>16550650It would have been cool, better luck on the next one. Hopefully it's this year.
>>16550649KSR is too much of a shitlib for me (I think he advocates for not actually colonizing mars)I lost my suspension of disbelief when mars started taking earth refugees due to 'overpopulation'
why are they like this
>>16550639How did SpaceX fund Falcon 9 development then? Falcon 1 revenue was a pittance, and Musk himself said that he had no more investments to put into the company and SpaceX was close to bankruptcy in 2008
>>16550655Spacex had 3 funding rounds between 2008 and 2010 so probably those.
>>16550653Why do Indians do bad click bait?Well it's obvious that they are better and harder working than American click bait.
>>16550655>>16550628The CRS procurement services paid for completing the development of both Falcon 9 and Dragon. Both the capsule and the vehicle were already under development with Musk's own fortune and the company's first private investors.
>>16550651wait they didn't manage to land it?
>>16550662Nah it lost telemetry well before the landing burn was supposed to happen, I'm not sure if it broke up during reentry or if it lived long enough to smash against the sea. Either way it didn't land on Jacklyn.I'd like to know more about what failed but I doubt we'll get more answers than we have now, not from BO.
https://x.com/mcrs987/status/1879924065252626786>GS1 SN001 Impact location at roughly 27°37'27"N 74°28'06"W>This was weirdly elusive to track. This small plume, clearly oriented downwind, appears at 07:11 UTC. About a minute after the entry burn. Gone in the next image. The fact that there is a sort of smoke plume makes me believe it impacted the ocean while mostly intact, yet still at high speed. This impact location is about 53 kilometers southwest of the LPV, possibly indicating severe guidance issues just before or during the entry phase.
Well shut me up, there's fresh info about what happened right there. I stand corrected.
>>16550570A lot. If you watched the second stage telemetry it lost over ten miles of altitude on the way to orbit. A third engine would do wonders for GS2, or maybe just leave this one as the turd it is while building a reusable replacement... and a wider first stage with eleven engines.
>>16550665>makes me believe it impacted the ocean while mostly intact, yet still at high speedIt ain't that easy in relighting rocket engines coming down the wrong way.
>>16550667It's too big and/or got too little thrust. When I watched the launch I fully expected it to blow up shortly after takeoff based on how fucking slow it was off the pad.
>>16550668>It ain't that easy in relighting rocket engines coming down the wrong way.How do you know that?
>>16550649The first book was the best. Whenever KSR starts a book, a countdown always starts ticking towards the point where the story becomes about "and here's why MY brand of communism is the correct one." For some books the counter starts at zero, but the Mars trilogy was able to get away mostly clean until fairly early on in Green Mars. He also uses robotics and automation like they're magic that can solve any problem. A character will just roll up to a situation and solve it by programing fully autonomous robots to handle it like they're some kind of wizard.
>>16550669It's a common problem with small hydrologgs second stages. Ariane 5/6 and Centaur are the same way. ICPS only isn't because the SLS core stage thröösts it 99% of the way to orbit.
>>16550670It hit the sea at full speed?
STAGE NOW WE HIT THE IMAGE LIMIT I WILL CONTINUE CRYING UNTIL SOMEONE STAGES
>>16550672Ariane as well as Vulcan both have to use SRB training wheels to deal with it.It's too fucking fat.
>>16550661Obviously Falcon 9 was under development before they got the contract or the money. Development began at least in 2005, and it was based on Falcon 1 tech so it could be said development started from the very first day of SpaceX. Which means this argument can be taken even longer, considering that Musk hired the development team from TR-106/TR-107, which were developed with taxpayer money. One can also point to how they leased government launch infrastructure for Falcon 9, which is a type of subsidy since they didn't have to pay the full up-front cost of brand new launch infrastructure.By the way, I'm not saying this as criticism of NASA or SpaceX. This is how industrial policy in capitalist country is supposed to work, unlike for example a market socialist country like China were the government often takes an equity stake in companies it helps fund. My only criticism is that NASA hasn't done more to help create more companies like SpaceX.
>>16550647I think it was actually proportionate. Also remember that spacex is working on a human rated version of starship and has functional space suits.
>>16550671>until fairly early on in Green MarsYeah the Mars cult stuff was baffling to me, I really enjoyed the first book where everything is getting set up at a massive scale.
>>16550659I assume this was only possible because they had secured a big contract in 2008When exactly were the CRS/COTS milestone payments paid out?
>>16550674Someone please stage with an /sfg/ ULA edition, to make the SpaceX cultists mad.
>>16550676>brand new launch infrastructureDude, they built their own infrastructure out of scraps they found around KSC. The shit they leased had rotted there forever.
>>16550676Fair enough. Still, people over-extend the relevance of TR-106 and TR-107 with regards to Merlin. They are similar engines in concept, but have no engineering commonality or ancestry.>>16550677They used roughly equal portions of time and budget, but they are much smaller and far lighter parts of the architecture than the launch vehicles.
>>16550676>>16550655COTS was structured as a kind of public private partnership requiring the contractor to put in some of their own money up front, so it was a kind of support rather than a full funding. At least, it required the contractor to take a big risk with their own capital, even if they could make it all back later
>>16550680The Mars trilogy is great when you can ditch the plot and characters and just read it as a 19th century travelog describing another planet
>>16550683How much expensive civil work did they have to do? How much range telemetry and other supporting infrastructure did they have to build?
Why should we stage? Let this be the longest /sfg/ thread
>>16550687Tell us more about this brand new infrastructure they were handed.
STAGE RIGHT FUCKING NOWWWWW NOWWW NOW NOW NOW NOW
>>16550501>new glenn is about to start eating into falcon's profitsretard
>>16550684>no engineering commonality or ancestry. Those projects kept a cadre of engineers with up to date expertise and experience on rocket engine development, which probably saved SX a ton of time and money when SX was at its most vulnerable. Imagine if Elon had hired noobs to develop his rockets - the additional costs and delays would've probably driven SX bankrupt.
Staging>>16550696>>16550696>>16550696
>>16550693I'm not saying that it didn't help them at a critical time. The bad faith version of the argument goes something like "SpaceX didn't make those engines, they copied them entirely from NASA, Elon steals everything." That argument shows up often enough that it's hard not to address it.
>>16550165One of the shuttles did suffer a tile loss and only survived because it hit a steel member and not something more melty. It was originally considered to build the shuttle out of titanium but I believe most of it is sourced from Russia plus cost made them reconsider. Russia did build a titanium submarine but it had to be welded in a giant inert tent with the welders in basically diving suites
>>16550707So it had a trench and a slab of concrete.Oh and they had to *purchase* an oxygen tank? That's not given, unless you're of the hebrew persuasion.
>>16550667yeah it was odd no one mentioned that. it descended from about 127 miles to 100 miles over the course of just a few minutes
>>16550688first thread to last through a NG and starship launch
>>16550674cry about it, faggot
>>16550685mostly, COTS was a sign of approval from NASA that caused private capital to try to jump into Elon's pants
>>16550348amazing restraint not to say "welcome to the club"
>>16550521Because it's NASA. Who gives a fuck?
>>16550795He's saving that for when they actually land a booster.
I missed it. I forgot the launch. fuuuuUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU>>16550157>>low-energy crowdlmao you americans are so funny. how do you faggots not understand that the all the cheering in spacex streams probably were and are fucking staged
>>16552778the launch was a massive L ngl
