it's huge in a few hotbed areas (NY, MD, VA, new england in general) across regular sports-playing ages, but if you are a gifted athlete and want to make a career of it, there is no money to be made in lacrosse so you play football or whatever instead. the career arc for a lacrosse player is basically be born wealthy -> get recruited by a D3 NESCAC -> join a frat and major in econ -> get hired by an investment firm -> retire at 57 with a country club membership
