It "failed" to expand globally in the same way Aussie-rules football did - they didn't have sailors travelling around the world bringing their sports with them. Association football had first mover advantage. The "high demmanding of equipment, support infrastructure, and complex rules" aren't really factors, you can dumb down handegg into a poverty sport as well (both teams line up, one team has the ball and passes it forward after the word "go" - done.)A lot of football clubs around the world were founded either by Brits or by people inspired by Brits.
