Poetry, at least intelligent poetry rather than the Pam Ayers/Rupi Kaur stuff, is one of those things which is always a few decades ahead of the mainstream zeitgeist. Sort of like avant garde music, where your Terry Rileys and Steve Reichs start doing a thing, then it takes a few years to percolate until every post punk act like Can or Kraftwerk are doing it too. Eg poets were doing the autofiction thing for decades before novelists cottoned on, or Ashbery and OHara playing the Pynchon De Lillo piano years before

He’s a barrister with chambers at inner temple, doubt he regrets it at all. He’ll get a few years experience then move to magic circle, will make more than all but the most highly paid cricketers, and have another 30 years to practice rather than being washed at 35 and getting a job coaching.
He’s probably already on £100k. How much is the average 33 year old cricketer earning right now?

Cricketers are paid like shit and always have been. Was reading about the South Africa rebel tours, and for most of the clinching factor was it would let them put a deposit on a house, which they’d never earn playing county or England matches.
Botham got on his high horse, but he was making loads from endorsements and appearances so didn’t have the same pressures.
The expectation back then was you played cricket basically for free, then start an actual career in your mid thirties.
>>
>magic circle

reminds me of virgins practising card tricks in their parents' basement
>>
>>150552670
He only earns 100k now because he dicked around playing cricket so he’s a few years behind the others. That number is only going up, and he’ll be pulling 350 base plus massive commissions by the time he’s 50 if he’s smart.
>>
>>150552708
Would be curious to know what the average county cricketer earns (let's say Lewis Hill at Leicestershire or Matt Taylor at Gloucestershire), I would guess it's still at least £50k

And keep in mind that Zafar Ansari was a Surrey all-rounder who had just broken into the England side at 25 or so, there's a fair chance he'd have got a big central contract and/or earned tens of thousands extra each year through franchise shite

>>150552738
I expect he's probably on more than £100k currently desu, but - even so - don't think it really makes it worth it

Oh wow you ended up with a £1.4 million townhouse in Pimlico and a younger wife with fake tits, all it cost you was toiling away for 10 hours per day 6 days a week doing boring shit in an office

>>
He found the cricketing life as mind numbing as you think the work of a barrister is (and he’ll hardly be doing the boring stuff certain civil servants do all day)
If I recall, he walked into a training session and Bairstow and Stokes were doing the bleep test against each other with fanatical competitiveness, and he thought it was just the most pointless shit he’d ever seen.
Cricketing glory is pretty brief anyway. John Crawley once hit 156 against Sri Lanka and Murali said he was the greatest batperson he’d ever bowled at. Do you remember the innings? Would you recognise Creepy in the street?
>>
now that the dust has settled, what went wrong?
>>
>>150552808
I saw a list of the England central contracts back in the day, and the highest paid player was Strauss as the captain, on about £120k. Rank and file were on about 60-80k. Same era they mentioned how little the Pakistani players were making, and how easily bribed they might be during the spot fixing thing. Amir was on something like 19k
>>
>>150552923
You'd have to be a really boring person to find trawling through legal documents to be as interesting as the thrills of a cricket match

Cricketing glory is eternal, I remember that Crawley innings like it was yesterday

>>150553003
Found a source from 2017 saying the average Div 2 salary was £37k, but that there's five centrally contracted players who earn £1m+ per year
So it seems like it's improved quite a bit for the internationals, at least

Yeah I think after KP they saw they had to start paying the top England players more to stop them fucking off to play for franchises. The media discourse was so retarded, like he was doing something immoral for wanting to get paid for being one of the best in the world at his job.
Hangover from the old gentlemen vs players distinction. Either you’re off to your uncles brokerage firm after the cricketing lark is over, or you’re back to coal face in Norfshire, so why do you need money to play for England? That and the shitty county revenues.

Another important factor is that social media and the internet have destroyed the mental and social wellbeing of most people under 40.
>>

High earners usually challenge this by saying "people should be more open about their salaries so they can see find out that they're being underpaid"

Not talking about your salary is how you end up getting underpaid. If you know what the market rate is and what your colleagues are earning, you are in a much better position to negotiate when raises get discussed. Otherwise they can pull out all the old we can’t afford that, nobody else earns that much in your position, muh team tricks and you won’t have a counter.
Sun Tzu knew
>>
You can know average salaries for a position without discussing it openly.
>>
Had a mad Beatles phase back in the day. Wore all their albums out, learnt to play the songs. Would go all day listening to nothing but the beatles. Can still appreciate them for what they are, but couldn’t listen to them now. That verse chorus verse stuff is too boring to my ears

But if you talk openly you’ll know if one of your colleagues is getting above average and can demand the same with much more authority in the negotiation.

In a bad mood because I found some great flight prices to India (£353 return) and asked my mate if I could go ahead and book them for us but he said nah I want to do it on my credit card (for the points/rewards or someshit) but was waiting for some money to come in before he did it and then he didn't book them and now all those flights have gone up by £100 each and the cheaper ones have completely gone. Now I'll have to pay the extra £100 knowing that this money (which could be spent on so many good things) is instantly wasted for no other reason than my friend's tardiness.

Suspect there'll be a few more events like this still to come, with solo travel I could let my penny pinching inclinations run wild, but when travelling with somebody else I open myself up to the casual profligacy which plagues most people.

Knowing roughly where you want to be on different dates while retaining some flexibility is ESSENTIAL for achieving ambitious plans to visit lots of places / see lots of things in a short space of time while keeping to a budget

This whole "go wherever the wind takes you" mindset only really works for people who are travelling for a year or longer

Met plenty of wasters with that mindset who basically just bum around at the hostel all the time, and are always grateful to be able to latch onto the plans of a muscular itinerary-haver
>>
I'll retain enough flexibility for some managed spontaneity too
E.g., Plan for Day 1 might be "Sightseeing", and Day 2 might be "Relax / Street food tour" - hardy too prescriptive on a day-by-day basis
>>

>>
>>150560834
Always a difficult one when talking to friends about things like this, because I already have the reputation for being a terribly stingy twat and don't want to make it too much worse

But it's a bit infuriating because it's not just my own money I'm trying to save, I'm trying to help them out too, and maybe if they actually listened to me they wouldn't be constantly whinging about how they don't have any money left the week before payday

People are just so dumb when it comes to money

Yeah that's a fair point desu, one I might have to do some more research into
Assumed I'd be fine as a veggie, but possibly not
Recently found out I've had a stomach infection for at least the last year, and I think it might have come from South America two years ago (accidentally drank tap water in Cartagena)

Australia and New Zealand should really be playing 3 match series every year. It could even be two home one away to make it easier.

Yeah tap water is the biggy I think - I got it into my head that the tap water in the hostel had been treated, and started glugging it liberally (it was 35C and humid, after all), but then regretted it bigly a week or two later when I started shitting uncontrollably

Risk is definitely lower with veggie food, but I guess you still have potential problems with lack of general hygiene and fruit/veg being washed with tap water

Also need to watch out for ice in drinks (usually made from tap water) and any juices/smoothies you buy (might have tap water added)

>If the Defender (i.e., the recipient of the slap) is knocked down and fails to return to their feet within the referee’s 10-count—or stands but is deemed medically or physically unfit to continue—the match is immediately stopped. The Striker (the person who delivered the slap) wins by knockout (KO) or technical knockout (TKO).

The match ends right then—there’s no continuation, extra round, or safety net unless a specific rule (like a “Redemption Round”) is implemented—but that rule is usually not active by default.

Technique against pace is pretty easy desu
Take a few muscular steps down the track as the bowler runs in to assert your authority and throw him off his length
Drive anything that's driveable, forcefully enough that any edges fly over slip
Forceful front-foot cut or guided dab through third to anything short of a length on off
Pull/flick any leg side shit to the ropes
Block the good balls
Simple as

>>150573797
Fortunately haven't come up against any left-arm pace in actual games, only in nets
Doesn't bounce as much on an actual track as it does in that net though
My height combined with a few strides down the track would negate any bounce

>>150573807
Guess we'll find out on Saturday
*No we won't because I'm down to bat at 6 and will inevitably come in against some slow loopy shit that I can't play, and get out for a duck again, if I'm even required to bat at all
>>
>>150573807
Did used to bat that way in the 1s when I was 17, when they played a few divisions higher than I do now

Only had a handful of matches and never got more than 30 odd for them, but best moment was coming down the track to an Aussie overseas opening bowler and pasting him through covers for 4
>>
>>150573826
I've barely faced leggies desu, because I reckon for every 1 leggie you have 4 or 5 offies

But I suspect you're right and I'd be equally shit against it

Just bowl it slow and straight (don't even worry about turning it) and you'll inevitably get me
>>
>>150573815
My average for the 2s is 80 m8, it's not just that one innings
(It's one other innings too)
>>
Remember the bowler cannot get you out without your consent. If he tries, simply refuse to be out and request him to go back to his mark and bowl another ball.
I once scored a triple century against my son’s bowling using this method, in 500 balls
>>
>>150573863
Tbh this was the only reason I was playing at the grade I was. I wasn't a good bowler but I used to get a bit of turn and bowled leggies which isn't something anyone in Australia was used to. I was chronically incapable of hitting the stumps but people would just give up their wickets coming out of their crease or trying to play shots
>>

>>
>>150573878
The WG Grace / every club cricket side made up of Pakistanis method

>>150573888
Probably something that gets found out very quickly at the higher levels, but at the steps below that loose spin bowling can be very effective desu
The old "shit gets wickets" adage - batsmen will inevitably come after you and find a way to get themselves out
Doesn't really work that way with loose pace though, that's typically the type of bowling it's easiest to score against
>>
>>150573930
I was at a high enough level for teenager, I played against a lot of guys who ended up in shield and getting the odd game for Australia. definitely as far as I was going to go though
>>
>>150573972
You can't have been that shit then
If it's just a case of chucking some shit down relatively straight and hoping for the best, any competent batsman would send that to the ropes pretty comfortably and without too much risk
So you must have been doing something with it
>>
there isn't a big gap between 1 and 2 at village level. it's not like county vs international or something where splitting averages is justifies - that's just a cope
>>
>>150574096
You keep saying "village level" as if it's an insult, but that just betrays that you've never actually played the game

Take a look at any of the regional Premier leagues (one step below pro game, most teams have at least a few current / former pros) and you'll see that half of the sides in the league are villages

For example, Pears captain Brett D'Oliveira also plays for the village of Ombersley (population 2,360, currently 5th best club side in the entire West Midlands)
>>
But, in my particular case, I'll admit that the bowling isn't much different in the matches I've played for 1s and 2s (in fact, the 2s game with the 75mph + opening bowlers actually had better bowlers than any 1s game I've been in), I've just suffered from acute mental weakness whenever I've been asked to play with the top dogs

This is the whole problem with fasts in English conditions and why the whole “stack the team with fasts” in the England series was one of the most retarded tactics of all time. Wood averages like 26 in Australia and 32 in England in tests.
>>
They always go on about the bowlers but when England last won in Oz the key bowlers were Anderson, Finn, Tremlett and Bresnan. Not sure any of them got above 85 in their whole careers.
The time before that was old man Botham, Gladstone Small, and Dilley who was quick.
Current England might want to look into the whole ‘score 500+ every innings’ strategy
