Why does London not have a team with "London" in their name? Most other British cities do have the name of their city in a football club name.
>>
It's like comparing yourself to Messi, it's presumptuous.
>>
That's actually a very good point

They do, you just have to drop down to the 11th division

Chelsea was originally going to be London FC at one point, it's why Stamford Bridge is in Fulham
>>
>>150698718
German pundits just add the London automatically to the point where I always thought those wear the actual names.
I think it's to make the teams and matches they report on seem more important if people know it's the biggest city.
>>
>>150698718
None of those clubs are located in the City of London
>>
>>150698718

because in a major city, neighbourhoods are more important
>>
>>150698718
Because "London" is a bunch of towns all next to each other
Some of these clubs were founded before they were incorporated into London

Chelsea London? Not like I haven’t heard it; but Arsenal gets that treatment way more often. „Arsenal London“ is the standard here, I feel, while most people still say FC Chelsea

This is the correct answer.
London used to be a lot smaller 60 years ago. All of the boundaries changed in 1965 when they abolished Middlesex - merging it into London - along with huge parts of Essex, Kent, Surrey - which made London 5 times larger than it was.
>>
Nobody in London ever mentions the word London. It's a cluster of small villages and hamlets as other anons have pointed out its
>>
>>150698718
Glasgow doesn't either. unless you count Glasgow City which is a womens teams (which we won't).

The two main clubs in Edinburgh aren't called 'Edinburgh' either.
>>
>>150698764
>Juventus Turin
>Lazio Rom
I could slap them, really
>Inter Mailand
this one is acceptable since the full name is Football Club Internazionale Milano ( but nobody ever uses the full name).

But I think it's just to give the location of a foreign (perhaps unknonw) club, especially back in the day without internet - and it stuck.
PSV? Where does it come from, Paris Saint V...?
PSV Eindhoven. Ah, Holland.
>>
>>150699177

Don't mention Glasgow celtic and Glasgow rangers

London is an all consuming beast which cannot be stopped. Like from that movie Mortal Engines where London is roaming around gobbling up smaller places.
>>
>>150699167
Except that still doesn't really explain. Lots of the main professional clubs in the OP were still in the old 'County of London' anyway and Tottenham and West Ham were in areas that were pretty much London anyway, its a bit disingenuous to say they weren't "London" clubs in areas that were culturally London and pretty much a stones throw from the administrative boundaries.

Might as well get on a high horse about Nottingham Forest "technically" not being in Nottingham city.
>>
>>150699185
Those aren't their official names though. Its just "Celtic Football Club" and "Rangers Football Club". People just refer to them as "Glasgow x"

london is a collection of towns. manchester is too, but there is a town called manchester. the city of london has existed for 1200 years and is in your picture but is small and has no professional team.
>>
>heh london doesn't actually exist
what is this cope
>>
Recently I learned that the 'City of London' is actually just a small part within what is generally known as 'London' where all the UK elites do their elitist stuff and the rest of 'London' with its 10 million residents is really just 'Greater London' that surrounds the actual city, which is more like a village where only like 10,000 people live

It's because those clubs were founded in the early days of football, mostly by workers from Northern England which was the original heartland of football. Football was a new sport, not very well known outside of major English cities, so it didn't make sense to include London in your club name, since most of the teams you were playing against were also in London.

If you and your mates were going to start playing a brand new sport with barely any presence outside of your city, would you include your city name in your club?

Manchester United are firmly rooted in the Borough of Trafford though. Which is kind of a weird borough because it's not really got a main town like the others

city of london is ran by the city of london corporation and technically not part of the UK. as it existed before the invention of (a united) England it was allowed to have a lot of independence. the Monarch only goes there if and when invited and has no power over it. in reality this matters little, unless you are doing your elite business.

The City of London is that tiny red dot in the middle. It’s the centre of the world’s “shadow banking” economy, which is estimated to account for half of the world’s assets. Very shady if you ask me…

Exactly. The Lord Mayor of London, who does all of the cool ceremonial stuff like Dick Whittington used to do, is an entirely separate figure to Sadiq Khan.
Greater London encompasses three cities - the City of London, Westminster, and Southwark - plus countless smaller towns and villages that it swallowed up as it expanded, such as Barnet
>>
Because “London” is actually Middlesex
