Cameroon was good a few years ago and got named regularly by the masses of people assuming African talent would eventually dominate the world, leading to an African World Champion. This prognosis was out there in the 80s already, and it's not going to vanish anytime soon
But Cameroon is a good example of why it's a dumb prognosis. These countries do not have the infrastructure and system approach to turn their raw talent into strong teams. They managed to produce a few good players, but they didn't manage to make these crucial steps. Their system probably is very corrupt as well, especially now that some Cameroonians have proven they can succeed
African nations have demography on their side, and urbanisation and the slow but noticeable increase in living standards don't harm their cause either. But they are too corrupt and too complacent to reliably produce strong teams. Even if they did, they'd still need a strong manager
People can mock European countries for gladly fielding the children of African immigrants. But for every ethnic African in a European national team, there are 10 ethnic Africans in African national teams that got nurtured and developed by European academies. Take both of these away and the gap between Europe and Africa gets bigger, not smaller
