We started caring a bit
Dirk fans are grown-ups now, he made the sport big here. The real growth will probably come in the next years since this team is better than Dirk + some nobodies. But actually becoming good for good requires smart planning as well
That being said, it still is an urban niche sport for the most part. And the last two games weren’t good at all, so no need to praise that team

They increased the funding a bit. Basketball is one of the easiest sports to get good at.

Basketball is one of the easiest sports. Germans are pretty tall and we're many.
You don't have to be athletic or have good stamina, because the field is literally tiny, could even fit in the box of a football pitch. It comes naturally to us
>>
It's strange how basketball hasn't been more popular before, since courts are absolutely everywhere
I guess handball draws too many people from the talent pool

only Olympics matter and they (these "people" dont represent me) got their asses handed there

Dirk, Detlef, big population and the country commits time and resources towards basketball (unlike the UK)
>>

Before Schrempf, nobody even knew this sport except from TV shows
Then Dirk appeared and actually got people hooked for the first time. That's when kids started playing and sponsors started funding the sport. That generation is now playing for the national team. It's up to them to grow the sport further so that the talent pool grows and the structures become more professional
Interest in the German league is somewhat rising as well, but there's a lot to improve. If everything goes well, this is only the beginning. If they fuck it up, we'll be mediocre again in 10 years and will have to wait for another Dirk to kickstart the cycle again
There are like 200,000 active basketball players in the entire country. Handball has 750,000, football is in the high seven figures. The sport still is mostly limited to the big cities and a few dedicated smaller towns that got hooked early on and now have to defend their position as bigger locations get involved
It's a neat sport for the most part, I hope we can improve further. After from ice hockey, it's the sport I want to see growing the most here

our women take good care of BBC(BasketballCommunity)

They've always liked basketball they were just never among the countries that were super obsessed by it. But it's in their top 5 sports. Germany won Eurobasket back in the 90s and obviously they had Dirk Nowitzki later who played a huge role in making the sport even more popular and inspired their current generation of players. Plus they're a developed firstie country that invests into sports so if they have a sport that even a small fraction of the population likes they're going to be good at it

>country that invests into sports
Rolling on the floor laughing
For many years already, politicians have been trying their hardest to not give sports a single cent. The result can be seen in our Olympic medal tally, among many other things. We’re absolutely decrepit. But the general presence of capital does keep everything from falling apart, yes
>>
>>150722056
Yea exactly imagine saying a neoliberal corrupt gov invests in sports or anything for that matter (especially their citizens).
They deregulate and cut everything.
That's why German Social Democrats are a shadow of former self (literally nobody believes their bs anymore) they adopted neoliberalism, gave up on everything that could actually benefit the workers and people and alienated everyone except retarded trannies and other such degenerates
>>
>>150720381
German families know better than to sign their kids up for football just to be bothered by brownies.

But german players are black...

Johannes Thiemann is a half-German mutt raised in Germany, so are Lo and the Da Silva siblings. Funnily enough, I think Schröder's father was German as well ... his first name was Axel. A black guy named Axel Schröder in the 60s? Sounds like a caricature
Isaac Bonga is 100% black, his parents fled from the DR Congo

Germany is only like 1% black. Most non whites are middle eastern
>>
>>150726120
And middle easterners generally are notoriously useless at any sport. Those few who aren't will often decide to represent their parents' home country
>>
>>150724722
Kek this, browns don’t have the height or athletic ability to play basketball.
>>
I would have said

>Leaf coaching

But he's now gone to coach to Canada basketball team and Germany still look super strong
>>
>>150727338
He's definitely helped promote the sport here and will be kept in good memory. Many people, even those who have nothing to do with basketball, were sad when he left the team. But he keeps advancing German basketball at Bayern, I guess
>>
>>150720381
national teams in basketball are irrelevant. you should judge basketball by club competitions. in the euroleague germany is irrelevant.
