Fix a sport with one change.
My suggestion: Remove the mat from high jump. There's no mats outside lying around in nature or urban areas. We wanna know who can jump over the highest bush or fence and land on their feet.

(if you really wanna break your neck for the gold medal i guess you deserve it)

They used to jump on sand and/or softened dirt. Would that suffice? It would basically lead to a partial return of the pre-flop techniques, so the straddle and maybe the scissor technique. The crazy part is that the best pre-flop jumpers were capable of >2.30m that way.
There were some floppers before Dick Fosbury, though. They basically did a full flip to avoid landing on their backs because mats weren't introduced yet
