Onosato has such a size advantage over Midori that if he didn't just pick him up and carry him out like a baby I'd be disappointed. Not even by the mawashi, just straight up cradling him in his arms.

He is just doing his style of sumo, ganbarizing, listening his oykata and just taking it one day at a time while not thinkin about the yusho
>>
Just think, two more wins and, assuming Hoshoryu fights the rest of the Sanyaku, he'll have gone a basho with zero kinboshi on his 2nd real attempt. It took until uncle's 3rd complete basho as a zuna for that.
>>
>>150916352
>He is just doing his style of sumo
Not a single leg trip though.
>>
Anyone else feel like Asakoryu is having some sort of spiritual awakening right now? Not necessarily getting better at sumo, but the reality of how hard his size is holding him back hitting home. He needs to transform himself into the second coming of Harumafuji, henka half his fights, or just put on more damn size.
>>

Get some content about a REAL rikishi down your throats you fat fucks.
>>
>>150916427
What's his kinboshi percentage looking like now? It must be a lot better since it's still early in his zuna career.
>>
>>150916548
he's the inverse of the takakeisho, onosho and ura types
manlets that put on massive weight to compensate for their lack of height and reach
asakoryu is going full buffed manlet mode like they used to back in the day, unfortunately he'll probably suffer the same fate as enho

fujinokawa is stealing his short king energy. if there was only one in the top division they would be stronger but instead they have to share.
>>
>>150917595
Then he needs to watch a LOT of tapes of Harumafuji and even Chiyonofuji because he's just gonna retire at 28 with a neck injury and no Sanyaku money at this rate. That the guy who beat Onosato in Onosato's first ever Ozumo fight has had to sit back and watch him waltz effortlessly to the rope is just sad.

Koga has a big match tonight. He's had a couple set backs this basho but today is where that all changes. Send him your energy.
>>
>>150917815
Chiyonofuji and especially Harumafuji had longer limbs. Asakoryu's not that similarly shaped, just light. Mainoumi was in Enho range, so I honestly don't know. Wakanohana III would be kinda close, I guess.

He just has dwarf proportions. Huge head, short limbs. Difficult to find a match, but plenty to be learned from the abovementioned rikishi either way.
>>
>>150919029
He can probably learn a lot from Dan tbdesu. Maybe not in terms of outright mimicry, but just in learning to think outside the box. How was Asanowaka I as a rikishi? His weight on sumodb isn't particularly high, though I understand that he likely never fought against the bulk that Asakoryu is struggling with.

>List of all kabu and who owns them
Actually a neat list to scroll through. I didn't know Aoiyama had a kabu and goes by Iwatomo now.

What's up with the vacant Kiriyama kabu? Is the cranky old fuck holding it doing it to be a dick? Is it the Enho kabu I've read comments about?
>>
>>150915952

>>
>>150919715
Because of how old oyakata are, there are still issues with the older ones being grandfathered into the post-2011 rules, meaning the JSA still needs to make sure they have enough of a retirement payout to balance how much they had to buy to buy their stock when they were active wrestlers.
>>
>>150919372
>Asanowaka I
Wikipedia says:
"He was a pusher-thruster, rarely fighting on the mawashi or belt. His most common winning kimarite was oshidashi (push out), followed by hiki-otoshi (pull down) and hataki-komi (slap down). He won only six career bouts by yori-kiri (force out) and was only credited once with a belt throw (an uwatenage in 2001).[7]"
Damn. Topkek.
He was hovering around 140 kg, though. Basically Ura at that point.
>>
>>150920259
What if he turned cardio into a kimarite???
>>
>>150920259

>>
>>150920390
That's just koshikudake with extra steps (like, actual steps on the clay). Would still be kino.
>>
I said this in the July tournament. And it's more apparent now. Kusano is all strength no technique. Everyone has pretty much figured him out. I'm surprised he's even 4-4.
>>
>>150924831
>guy who does good in double digit mægashira ranks does less good when promoted to more competitive single digit ranks
brilliant deduction
>>
>>150924931
What does this have to do with my critic against his sumo style? I'm talking about his over reliance on strength. Not his opponent quality.
>>
>>150924831
It's only his second tournament in Makuuchi tho. He's still learning.
>>
>>150924831
I don't understand why people were saying he was getting wins by being huge. With Onosato I can understand this comment since he was 6'4 and 190kg, but Kusano is 6'1 and 150kg. He isn't huge at all, in fact he's below average in Makuuchi.

Kusano is Japanese Shishi.
>>
Speaking of Onosato I had a thought based on that story of him being knocked off his bike by a car when he was 10 (RIP that car).

What's the top speed that an original Mini could drive at Onosato, and Onosato successfully stop it? Assuming the front of the car had a little padding so a random shard of metal didn't kill him. I've heard a tachiai between two top big guys can hit 800-900kg of force, and according to Google a Mini weighed 585kg.
>>
>>150925856
Yeah, I don't get it either. He's strong and was bigger than the guys he came up with (Aonishiki, Fujinokawa), but he's bang on average sized in Makuuchi.
>>
>>150926308
he looks more muscle than lard. Also have you seen his legs? They are as big as Onosato's
>>
>>150926508
Maybe he's getting the same disappointed glare training that's worked for Atamifuji lately.
>>
Some times you win 4 in a row, some times you lose 4 in a row.

>>
Is Hosh this good, or is everyone jobbing to him?
>>
>>150927331
This is him healed and confident. He still looks like he's putting up a fight and actually wrestling with his opponents.

Onosato is the one looking sus with all of his matches being
>push forward
>win

then again, they are yokozuna
>>
How funny would it be if Abi did a Midorifuji and won every match from now on?

Hosh and 'sato have looked equal this basho. Sure H*kuoho got the better of 'sato but the rest of his matches have looked better on average than Hosh's matches, where guys like Hiradoumi have given him a run for his money. Even Gonoyama scared Hosh while Onosato told him point blank to fuck off into the third row.

Both are performing as Yokozuna this basho. No one else really looks close. Dan still has that low-Hosh energy where you assume he'll win a matchup but you're still lowkey scared he won't.

he couldn't have got as big as he did without alcohol to begin with, there isn't enough time in the day to eat 15,000 calories of chanko, with alcohol you can drink down 1000 calories in under a minute easy
>>
>>150919372
>Dan
>learning to think outside the box
Dan's style is pretty conventional historically, even if it's not the most common today. It's not like he has some secret freestyle wrestling moves that has never been seen in sumo before. Dan's secret is having the technical skill, athleticism, and brain to succeed while having a coach who seems like he can actually coach.
>>
>>150929604
>>150933637
But he only had a crippling alcoholism addiction as a coping mechanism for all his injuries. Injuries which he couldn't take time off to recover from because he was the only one keeping the lights on as the stable's only sekitori.

Dan is also incredibly strong and he trains harder than anyone else, he is also still getting stronger at a rapid pace, back in May he wasn't able to outmuscle Zak, but the last two times they've met Dan won both just by pushing harder than Zak did, its probably not much longer until he is stronger than Onosato too.

It's his assistant. Apparently Zak is top tier with his assistants and they all really want to help him to greatness, so they're doing his corner routine with him so he can remind himself that he's fighting for his homies. If he can get back to 10-5s and regain his Ozeki pride it's more than worth it, which he's on course for right now, though he still has Onosato and Hoshoryu who are going to murder him. Hopefully he'll take a win off Hoshoryu, that'll regain him a ton of pride.

Another amazing day of sumo. My only complaint is WTK's Ozeki run essentially ending and needing a full restart. WTKoga might end up dodging one or both of his yokozuna fights if they're tied up with Dan, Zak, Takanosho, Shodai, Ryuden & each other over the last 5 days, so winning out might still not be impossible for him.
>>
Who would you rather WTK dodged, Hosh or 'sato?

I don't care, WTK making Ozeki means Shishi can't survive on 7-8 again because M18e will disappear.

shishi's leg injury head so he is good now, he'll get an extra large promotion on the next banzuke because he'll go ahead of all the juryo risers, still stands a chance at a sansho this basho too

Having a sekitori is easy; just take on a huge Mongolian. Tuva is practically Mongolia. He got lucky with Nabatame and his childhood friend Mita. Mita especially because he's all set for Makuuchi. Female fans are gooning over him already.

>>
>>150949356
>Hard to say how Mita will do in makuuchi.
the last 4 to get consecutive juryo yushos all had double digits in their subsequent makuuchi performances. there was a guy in 1990 who went 2-13 in makuuchi after his consecutive juryo championships, but he was so injured he retired the next basho
>>
>>150949934
Zak can put up 14-1
KOGAnowaka could never
>>
>>150950018
I see, thanks. Guess I'll be cautiously optimistic then.
>>
Mita is bigger than manlet F*jinokawa so he'll be fine.
>>
aside from kyujos nearly everyone (12 of 15 occurrences) after 2010 put up double digits in makuuchi after consecutive juryo bashos with 11 or better wins, but between 1970 and 2010 almost nobody did (2 of 21 times)

so you pretty much have to guess that there was serious hazing that used to be done to guys just promoted from juryo which ended after 2010

If you shift the time table to 2011 instead of 2010, that's when the match-fixing scandle broke which almost certainly was related to makunouchi debutantes not doing well. One can assume that group of guys was telling newbies to eat shit on their debut or the normal hazing would look like a joke. Then those guys got booted out and the dam burst.

See, there used to be a wrestler named Aoiyama whose real name was Daniel and we nicknamed him Dan. He was also a slav. Then he retired last year.

Then some random unrelated slav from somewhere else showed up and people started calling him Dan.

The end.
>>
>>150951194
It's because his real name is Danylo. There's a reason why nobody called Shishi Dan, because his real name is Serhii.

It's not so much that the foreigners left of their own accord, but moreso that successful wrestlers have been systematically ousted for a couple of decades. Wakanohana left because of how controlling the JSA was, Akebono because the fan club was forcing him into an arranged marriage, Asashoryu probably had it coming, Takanohana tried to overthrow the JSA leadership and got thrown out and Hakuho was pushed into retirement for something no other oyakata would be because of his pridefulness. That’s not systematic ousting, though. Each of the examples you mentioned are easily explained extenuating circumstances. (Wakanohana left because he was feuding with his brother, btw.)
The only one where you could point to the JSA itself conspiring against someone would be Hakuho; and even then, Hakuho is hardly blameless. He clearly didn’t appreciate the idea of starting at the bottom like every single other newbie elder.

Futahaguro: fired as an active wrestler
Takanosato: deceased, former Naruto
Chiyonofuji: deceased, former Kokonoe

All others deceased.

If you look at the historical record, the list of Yokozuna who either left the JSA early or never joined after retirement isn’t limited to just foreigners. The citizenship requirement adds a wrinkle, but the Yokozunas of the 90s all being gone seems more like an oddity than a trend.
>>
>>150960001
Additional note: Hoshoryu has applied for citizenship, suggesting he wants to stay with the JSA following his active career.

>>
>>150960001
>Harumafuji: Didn’t have Japanese citizenship so could not have stayed on regardless of how he left
>Asashoryu: Didn’t have Japanese citizenship so could not have stayed on regardless of how he left
Did not know this. So you're telling me the pinnacle of a sport that is uniquely Japanese are not afforded citizenship? Did they just not want it or weren't offered it?
>>
>>150960495
You have to apply for it. I don't think it's "offered" to anyone.
>>
>>150960495
The sticking point is that Japan does not allow dual citizenship, which means you must renounce your previous citizenship before Japan gives you citizenship. This increases the bureaucratic delays triply, because your old country has no incentive to rush to recognize you renouncing them, and both countries under international law must ensure that bureaucratic snafus don't leave a person stateless. This ended up fucking over Kakuryu's old stable, which had to dissolve and move before Kakuryu was allowed to inherit it.
>>
>>150960719
the other thing is Japan basically never punished those who hold a dual citizenship so normal people don't really care. they can keep both citizenships virtually and nothing happens. everyone just ignores and it works.
only famous people, mainly famous athletes, have to do that unusual tiresome shit.

>Wakanohana left because he was feuding with his brother
Wakanohana left the JSA in 2000. Takanohana I died in 2005, which prompted the very public feud between the brothers. There were also a few negative statements about the JSA being control freaks, him never wanting his kid doing sumo because of them and them hiding an american football offer from him back when he was a rikishi.
>extenuating circumstances
When you have 1 or 2, it's extenuating circumstances. When you have 6 out of 10, it's a pattern.
>>
>>150960495
>Did they just not want it?
Asashoryu did not. He never had any intention of staying on. He was going to cash his last check and go back home to Mongolia, where he had been investing heavily.
Harumafuji? Who knows? Usually, foreigners who intend to stay on typically get their applications in the second they can. Maybe Harumafuji thought he had more time, but he was nearly 30 when he made ozeki, so I wouldn’t guess it was a high priority for him.

It is extenuating circumstance. You can’t say it’s a systemic thing when it’s not the system conspiring to get rid of these guys.
In the the list in >>150960001
There’s maybe three examples dating back to the 80s.
Wakanohana was just sick of the JSA’s shit. Were they suppressing him or did he need a break from a thing that had dominated his life from birth?
Takanohana literally went to war with the JSA. He lost and he left. He could have stayed on. Same with Hakuho. When you lose a power struggle you can take your whupping or you can leave.

but The JSA didn’t get rid of Akebono, Akebono shot himself in the foot by alienating his supporters.
The two Mongolians could not have become elders anyway. That’s not the JSA tricking them.

Sure, they’re a bunch of corrupt old guys but if they were that dead set against foreigners holding shares, they’d look pretty silly since there’s like a dozen foreigners already in the JSA.
>>
The real JSA conspiracy is against Takatoriki’s sons.
Oho spends his career in a stable with literally no one who can compete with him, coached by a guy who never made it out of juryo.
That old bastard retires and the stable is given to some nobody who capped out at M9 and only scored a KK in the top division once in twelve attempts.

Should've followed the eldest into pro wrestling, they would've made more money that way. Hanada also figured that out when his football dreams dissolved, even though oyakata are still trying to jump over each other to recruit him.
>>
>>150961278
>The two Mongolians could not have become elders anyway
Again, wrong. They could've if they wanted to. Neither expected to retire when they did. Not having citizenship at that point on its own means nothing.

>Akebono shot himself in the foot by alienating his supporters.
The man lost his kabu for refusing an arranged marriage.

>they were that dead set against foreigners holding shares

Maybe the two brothers who can’t get out of makushita, but I don’t think Yukio Naya makes as much as Oho. Yukio doesn’t exactly headline events for NJPW or anything like that. He’s a mid-carder in an indie promotion.

The competition for top ranked wrestler at Kise stable is one of the exciting sub sub plots of every basho and Churanoumi has been in the mix pretty consistently for the last year or so
>>
>>150961452
>Not having citizenship at that point on its own means nothing.
That’s not exactly true. Getting citizenship is a years-long process and there is no grace period with the JSA. If you’re not a citizen when you retire, you cannot hold a share, not even the five-year membership granted a Yokozuna.
Like the other guy said, those who are interested in staying with the JSA long term get started as early as possible.

For example, let’s say Harumafuji really did want to stay, he was 33 when he retired. He’d been eligible to hold a share for over ten years at that point.

But he also married a Mongolian girl, he’d received his law enforcement qualifications in Mongolia while still an active wrestler and attended distance learning classes at a Mongolian university.
Really seems like he was planning for a post sumo life in Mongolia.
>>
>>150961560

I have no reason to care for them beyond what entertainment themselves and their students could provide me. We are at what looks like the tail end of a pretty dry half a decade of ozumo and it seems to me all these notable absences aren't unrelated. That's it.

>>150961610
>Getting citizenship is a years-long process
It took Hakuho 5 months to obtain it.

I did say "on its own" for a reason, though. It does seem like they didn't intend to stay. Not that it changes anything relating to JSA shenanigans. It just means they didn't get screwed as hard because all they lost was the rest of their wrestling careers.
>>
>>150962342
>It took Hakuho 5 months to obtain it.
It didn't, that's just how long it took between applying to renounce his Mongolian citizenship and getting his Japanese citizenship. But that's not at the start of the process, because as mentioned above, countries can't accept a renunciation of citizenship unless it's guaranteed that you will receive a new citizenship so that you are not stateless.
>>

Wrong. Scouting in sumo isn't just about finding the good wrestlers, it's also about getting them to join your heya. Unless you think it's the less popular wrestlers who don't win much who have all the good connections, being a top wrestler is very important.
