/copalib/, I want to ask you a question. What do you think about the Copa do Brasil? It might sound like a strange question, but I'm still not sure on how I feel about it as a competition or even how it fits into the broader picture. Estaduais exist for the sake of tradition, being the oldest competitions in the country and also providing smaller local clubs with fixtures, visibility and a chance to rise to national level. The Brasileirão is obviously the big national competition, while the Libertadores and the Sudakino are the 1st and 2nd tiers of continental football. But the Copa do Brasil was created as a compromise with the smaller clubs when we finally abandoned the 1980s hundred club madness in favour of a proper division system. The FA Cup is the oldest competition in England and the root of English club football. In other European countries, cups are usually less important competitions that provide a chance for lower division clubs to play with the big ones while being used by the big ones as an opportunity to rotate the team, try different tactics and give a chance to subs and reserves (pretty much what we do with the estaduais). It doesn't look like CBF know what to do with it either. The competition spent a little more than a decade providing an alternative cup for everyone not in the Libertadores, which was an interesting format as it became an accessible competition for less competitive teams. But then it was dropped in order to make the competition more prestigious and now it's as predictable as the Libertadores and the Brasileirão. CBF has been working overtime to make the competition look important, both through marketing strategies and by offering handsome prizes, but it still feels a bit pointless. We created the competition to pander to clubs outside the big 12, but since the non-Libertadores rule was dropped there's no more room for Sport, Paulista or Santo André to pull cheekies.What's the point?

It can either inflate a club's achievements in a season (Palmeiras 2020, Atlético 2021, Flamengo 2022) or serve as a consolation prize (São Paulo 2023, Flamengo 2024). But I don't see how it brings anything unique to the table and I don't care about it in the slightest if my club isn't playing.

But then again, the modern Copa do Brasil format only serves the small clubs in the sense that they can win one, two games and then leave. This year we had three smaller clubs in the R16, all of which got knocked out as expected. If the main concern are the smaller clubs, we could perhaps think of ways to professionalise lower level football and make it more attractive rather than having small clubs depend on a miracle upset to earn some money in a competition they have no chance of winning. Or maybe rethink the format so that the Copa do Brasil can go back to being a competition where Juventude, Brasiliense, Vitória and Figueirense could realistically dream of winning.
