Was he really as good as people say?I mean how different can be referees from each other. Did he never made bad calls or why his GOAT status?
>>151080073Just made all the objectively right calls every time, every game, even in high profile games. It was just unusual and unheard of which is why he sort of became the first and only ref celebrity. It's been a while now but I think at the time I thought he retired a bit early, maybe the popularity got to him a bit in the end and he thought he couldn't do the job properly anymore, or perhaps could afford not to.
>>151080073He never blundered, and commanded enough respect to keep everyone in line during an era when the occasional player meltdown was still happening. Strong combo
>>151080073Obviously an industry plant psyop who got insane marketing by (((FIFA))) to make it look like the sport wasn't rigged top to bottom at a time when common ref scandals brought their organisation into disrepute, he played his role to perfection though.
>>151080073Contrary to every rule of federal regulations, this man allowed the decisive match for the title to be played on a waterlogged pitch because the team he supported had to win
>>151080073He was a good referee in the midst of many shitty ones, that's why he's considered great.
Marketing. Same as Ali, for example.
Ask Everton fans if they think he was a great ref who never made mistakes
>>151091472>Ask Everton fansNo, I don't think I will.
>>151080073The standards of refereeing are so shit that anybody half-decent could be GOAT
