8 fucking MILLION viewers for just the semifinal series. Highest rating in MLB HISTORY.

Why is /sp/ always wrong? Soccer is still not growing in the states, basketballs ratings are in the toilet, and baseball just outdid every football game this week.
And its not even the World Series.
>>
>>151395640
baseball is unironically the fastest growing sport in the world. soccer peaked about 2 decades ago during some of the most KINO world cup series ever, but now thats all gone.

i remember when NFL games would be interrupted to update the LCS games and the NFL pre game shows would be a third previewing the baseball games during October. Popping a dead cat bounce rating doesn't change anything the thought of NFL being interrupted for MLB updates is insane now

Good for you, nice. I'm not a baseball guy, I don't really get the sport and it seems very long to me. But I kind of appreciate the autism behind it. There needs to be a good bat-and-ball game, and I'll take baseball over cricket any day
But wasn't baseball struggling (relatively speaking) recently? Did it get turned around? How come?
Also, from my personal experience, soccer does seem to grow in the US, just not enough to eclipse the other sports anytime soon

Do Americans tend to watch multiple sports equally? I am under the impression that the average football fan here is relatively clearly separated from the average handball, ice hockey, or basketball fan. It feels like most people have one main sport and don't really care about the rest, but I can't really back this up with any surveys
Since our clubs can span multiple sports (like Bayern also having one of our best basketball teams, or the former Hamburg handball team), some people may support their club in multiple sports, but the base for that tends to be football
>>
>>151396159
If there's one thing americans are best at it is consuming media. Yes americans follow all their sports teams in their city.
>>
>>151396159
It's hard to generalize such a big population, but based on my experience yes, it's more split between non sports guys, and sports guys who generally watch a few different sports here. The seasons for each sport are generally spread out over the year and the teams are all at a high enough level that I think people get entertainment out of all of them. The addition of sports betting has increased cross sport watchers as well I'm sure. But personally I'm just a baseball guy

>>
>>151396159
most of the sports are kinda spread out. most people i know watch 2 or 3 of the big 4, or they watch all 4 but obviously prefer 1 or 2 (usually NFL and MLB among my friends at least)
summer you got baseball, and then as the season winds down NFL starts, baseball playoffs start and in the middle of that NHL and NBA starts
baseball ends and then it's full NFL autism mode if you already weren't into full NFL autism mode while NHL and NBA keep going, then you got the super bowl, nfl is over. NHL and NBA seasons get towards the end and baseball is already starting up again then you have NBA and NHL playoffs
basically there's a sport on year round. add in watching soccer or whatever and you will always have something to CONSOOM

So now the NBA is struggling? What did they do wrong?
I kind of feel like next-gen American basketball will kind of suck in terms of the individual star power, which seems to be a major factor for the sport's self-image and prestige. LeBron, Curry, KD, Harden and some other big guys are on their last legs, and the upcoming guys are mostly yuropeons ... and Cooper Flagg, I guess? It seems weird, since I am 100% sure Americans still care way more about basketball than most Europeans. Is your youth development fucked up somehow? But that's just my perspective as a clueless outsider, and even if I am right with this, it doesn't have to be related to an NBA crisis

Jews from Bavaria
>>
>>151396343
I always feel like Korea is some weird special case. All Koreans I know (internet and personally) are football guys who are very nationalistic about their Korean football stars. They all watch the Premier League and the Champions League. But then I heard - and it's not too hard to believe - that no one in Korea gives a shit about their domestic football league and that they all watch their national baseball league
Korea doesn't even seem to be that good at baseball considering it's the less global and competitive sport. Taiwan on the other hand seems to be very bad at football, I can picture them as a nation dominated by baseball right away

There is nothing wrong with new players. There were always ups and downs regarding talent. Some draft years are packed, some are just full of nobodies. There's a lot of money, little chance of serious injury, and a relatively sure way to stardom, if a player is talented. Amongst athletes, basketball will always be number one choice.

The problem is just the state of nba at this time. Silver is braindead idiot. Teams are chugging 3's, they play no D, and everyone is constantly injured, because of all the physicality that's allowed by the refs, and because of stupid owners that overload their stars with minutes played. And Silver is doing nothing at all. NBA was constantly changing under Stern. He adapted Shaq rules to help build up his career. He introduced paint circle. He banned zone defence to help facilitate more aggressive play. Silver has everything in his hands, and he's doing nothing. He can't even fix intentional fouling of bad free throw players. Something that's fixed in Europe by refs calling techs.
>>
>>151395815

>>151396517
NBA is glorified pick up basketball... but also the NBA is a much different league than the other sports in the US (especially baseball). In baseball a lot of fans don't really give a shit about the overall league except for right before the playoffs and the playoffs, they only care about their team and their division. The NBA is full of fans that just don't care about a lot of teams (even a local team) and only care about bandwagoning the best teams and players nationally. So the NBA fanbase is kind of shallow and easy to lose if things aren't going right.

I would have less baseball to watch
>>
>>151401630
because then the season would be like 4 months long
>>
>>151396222
not necessarily
network tv was way more powerful 15 years ago than it is today where it has to compete with the internet in everyone's literal hands via smartphones
now people pirate/watch restreams because households have been cutting their tv channels but you ironically need a cable subscription to pay for mlbtv
>>
>>151401630
well, many of baseball fans are stat autists and it would be harder to compare players' stats and numbers with the stats in the past if they cut the amount of games in half. that's a big deal.
also, ticket revenue would go down a lot.
>>
>>151401630
you would kill the sport
a city's ballpark is an attraction and a regular season ticket is available to the everyman. even a whole family outing is not terribly expensive. so if you want to enjoy even just one of the 162 games in person, you can. the accessibility is part of the appeal.
baseball season is also in between all the other major sports besides the summer olympics so it just gives any enthusiast something to follow for half the year.
speaking competitively, for a sport where hitting the ball 30% of the time is pretty fucking good, you need the historically 154+ games to account for variance, so the teams that make it to the pennant races really are the most deserving.
>>
>more people than ever watching baseball and it's growing

>>
>>151401896
give the cubbybears a chance
>>
>>151401985
I was going to this postseason but as it drew near I saw all those posts from Cubs fans practically everywhere constantly going off about how they're going to the playoffs and we're in dead last place and even worse attendance shaming us (even though it's all Jerry's fault) while they pack their park. I gave up any hope for peace there and was happy that it was the Brewers who shut them the fuck up. Then they turn tail and say how could we be monsters and root against the Chicago team for Wisconsinites. Well maybe look in the goddamn mirror huh cubs fans?
Truly though the thing that pisses me off the most is always the attendance shaming. It's like they don't even know who the fuck Jerry Reinsdorf is. I'm sick of the victimblaiming.

it might happen, same shit happened to basketball, superteam culture became a thing, sold out to promote lebron and whatever team he jumped to and i think its one of the many reasons as to why the sport is where it is now. It may not show its effects now but maybe 5-10 years down the line like the nba. You can see many parallels with how they handled lebron and his teams with how ohtani and the dodgers are being handled and promote by the league and how the media handles it as well

The problem is your product is just worse right now. You had two post season games and they draw something like 5-6M Americans, football had one game on Amazon prime and it draws 12-17.7M and it was far better in terms of quality than both games today (which had maybe two moments where the game scored actually changed, otherwise it was just a boring Slurper).
