Can some football expert explain to me what exactly prevent defense prevents when it feels like it always leads to higher scoring instead?

Is it the equivalent of parking the bus and if so, why do teams do it?

didnt the bears just run prevent D at the end of the game against the super bowl champs and win yesterday

It's a dumb bend but don't break mentality. DCs are fine with giving up big chunks of yards and let the other team get into field goal range as long as they don't give up a tuddy

It prevents them from winning lmao

Got'em!

Because if a DC called a cover 0 blitz package in situations that call for a prevent defense and gets burnt, they would be fired. Same reasoning applies to an offense running the ball when they could possibly end the game by throwing. If they go 3 and out with no burnt clock then lose the OC would be put on the hotseat. Prevent defenses may not be the right call but they are the right call if you're thinking about job security.

It's very much a glass ceiling that someone tries to break every few years and dies trying

This is all because the season is too short, there are too few games thus making virtually every game a must win (or must not lose), thereby risk aversion is the favoured strategy
>>152211520
It prevents the deep passing game
>>
>>152211520
Scared bitch strategy in most cases that alters the defensive player's mindset as they are following coach's instruction vs previous instructions that got them to that point in the match.

It is! Cowardly DCs should be fired not having their job kept secured

Look at all the open space that linebacker has to cover to stop a 20 yard catch turning into a lot more. They are also only sending 3. Cover 4 with the flats either matched to whoever comes through the zone or blitzing if no one comes is better. Pressure stops deep balls.

It works more often than it doesn't, retarded fans just have confirmation bias whenever it doesn't work

>prevent defense prevents
Prevents breakaway touchdowns by allowing 15 to 20 yard chunk plays but having many defenders downfield behind the receivers. It's asinine and it shouldn't be used. Call the defensive plays the same as you would in the second period. We have all see teams march down the field with one twenty-yard gain after another. Why allow the offense to move the ball in big chunks so quickly?

theoretically but it requires good open field tackling when the receiver is likely to have more speed and space than normal and the qb is likely to have more time
Along with it being much more predictable and easy to target weaknesses
