I feel like all of our World Cup host cities are world famous, except for Kansas City. Do you know anything about this place, non-Americans?
>>
I wonder if they know it's not in Kansas.
>>
>>152355475
I know it's in Missouri (but not the capital), but there's a smaller Kansas City right next to it in Kansas. It's on the Kansas River.
Truth be told, I find it very annoying that it's not a single big city in Kansas. Kansas City in Missouri ... having two different cities with that name next to each other in two states ... it just feels off. I also know the city is in four different counties, which I also find weird
I know the Kansas City Chiefs are from there, but I think they have no NBA or NHL team. I think the city has like 500,000 inhabitants? Heard it's famous for its influence on Jazz. And given its location, I assume it was founded in 1815-1840
Saying that it's one of the largest cities in the middle of the country should be obvious

If you really must go to Kansas City, go to Missouri and not Kansas.

Thats the closest the mob bosses can get to Vegas in Casino

Thats about it.

You just have to remember that the state of Kansas is empty and nothing worth remembering is located there. It's so empty even Kansas City is located in a different state
>>
>>152355475
I couldn't tell you a lot about Houston, Dallas, and Atlanta either. Yeah, these are bigger names than Kansas City. But I wouldn't call them world famous, especially not Atlanta. Saying something about Seattle is kind of hard as well ... Amazon is from there, so is Starbucks. They have a big tower. Not bad, but is it really impressive in terms of reputation? Many people won't know that either
NYC and LA and Boston and Philadelphia are either too huge to ignore or have actual history people can cling to a bit. San Francisco probably also gets a pass because of the bridge and Silicon Valley. Chicago and Vegas aren't hosts, but they are world famous as well, I'd say. But in general, your cities are a bit of a mystery box to Europeans for example since the cities are pretty young and lack historical monuments, leading to all of them being perceived as relatively similar. They all have downtowns with some skyscrapers, most of which look more or less the same, and they tend to sprawl a lot
(Also, I refuse to acknowledge East Rutherford as New York City)
>>
Are there any cities or states in the USA that have only won the MLS Cup, and where all the NBA, MLB, NHL, and NFL teams have empty trophy cases?
>>
>>152356179
it sounds like you understand.
>flyover states=bland and nothing notable happening
>chicago is exception

>East Rutherford
Im from new jersey and this one gave me a chuckle
>>
>>152356141
It's a humiliation ritual indeed for Kansas
But I'm autistic enough to know Kansas has like 3,000,000 inhabitants, which means it's probably like 30th to 35th among all states
So if Kansas is empty, what is Wyoming? Giga empty? Alaska gets a pass, I suppose
>>
>>152356291
>Wyoming? Giga empty?
yeah. spot on
>>
>>152356264
Is Texas flyover? Can't be, right? It comes off as culturally distinct and is only exceeded in population by California. It also has coastline
Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and shit ... I suppose I get that. All flat as fuck, cornfields, straight line borders. Feels very interchangeable. Or so I've heard
>>
Any time I’ve been in trouble I knew I wasn’t in Kansas anymore.
>>
>>152356584
probably at least 90% of it, yeah for sure
>>
>>152356179
AFAIK the Dallas stadium isn't in Dallas either.
>>
>>152356772
Yeah, it's in Arlington, a suburb
I don't think they build many of their stadiums in the actual cities. The Boston one is also far away, and I think the San Francisco one is like 50 kilometers away or some shit
>>
>>152356772
>>152356826
ye. cheaper real estate and expenses, but still charge an arm and a leg for tickets
>>
>>152356291
Kansas is bottom 10 in terms of population density. The other states that low have a variety of neutral beauty. Kansas doesn't. It's just flat farmland with nothing natural or manmade to break up the monotony. It's just an extremely anonymous state to be in
>>
>>152356909
Kind of makes sense if you need a lot of space. But it also is ridiculous to pretend it's still the city in that context. Must be a nightmare to get to as well
Not like you absolutely have to do it as close to a city center as possible, but the NYC one and the San Francisco one are kind of shameless
>>
>>152356826
>I don't think they build many of their stadiums in the actual cities

They actually do, if you look up the majority of nfl stadiums they are within the city limits of the actual major cities. Arrowhead for example is in Kansas City and (new) Mile High is in Denver. But yeah it seems to be a trend that the new soulless stadiums are all in lower cost suburbs because billionaires are cheap bastards and use moving the stadiums as black mail to get free money from tax payers.

The new Soldier Field will not be in Chicago or same for the new Cleveland stadium. Generally it seems a lot of stadiums built in the 2000s or later are not in the city limits.
>>
>>152357224
Yeah, it adds up. The older a stadium, the more likely it is in the city, perhaps even the center. Nowadays, the owners all want to "develop the environment" (i.e. build 1000 shops next to the stadium) or something. And save money, as you've said
Despite having no owner, Bayern built their stadium in the middle of nowhere, that was in 2005. Still in Munich, but it hardly counts. They get clowned hard for it by other fans, especially since it means the stadium has no real name - only the sponsor name. It's thankfully the only example here I can think of. Although Hertha BSC is kind of similar: the Olympic Stadium is relatively far from the city center and many people think the club would be in a better place if they had stayed in Gesundbrunnen, a central part of the city where their first real stadium stood. But they wanted the big venue. Building an Olympic Stadium and park, which all takes a lot of space, decades before a club decides to move there is a bit different, of course

From a sports perspective, what's the ideal city in the USA for a man who hates the Kansas City Chiefs, hates the Atlanta Braves, hates the Chicago Blackhawks, hates the New Jersey Devils, and hates the NFL, MLB, and NHL in general?

>>
>>152357561
>. Building an Olympic Stadium and park,

The olympics are an even bigger scam than moving stadiums to suburbs imo. I have no idea why anyone wants them after what happened in Montreal or South Africa.
>>
>>152358370
Ah yeah, true. Forgot about the Missouri. But it is on the Kansas River as well after all, right? It was my personal self-confirmation to explain why Kansas City is not (really) in Kansas. Sure, the Missouri is the bigger and more important one, but if Kansas City is not in Kansas and not defined by the Kansas River, then it shouldn't be called Kansas City
The Missouri being larger than the Mississippi but still having to cede the name is more forgiveable, I assume the river was named that way before people realized the Missouri exists and is larger
>>
>>152358252
wrong, the kansas side is where all the rich neighborhoods are

>>152357745
>>
>>152358625
The city limits go right to the state line of Kansas. The Missouri is longer than the Mississippi by 1 miles but the Mississippi dwarfs it in volume

>>152358659
I heard everyone bragging about Overland Park and Olathe and the others but they were just generic suburban cities. You could tell they were wealthy but overall really bland considering the incomes of the residents.
>>
>>152358503
The 1936 were objectively a success ... not in hindsight, of course
They can easily be a scam nowadays because IOC is very despotic, and because it is a challenging project involving many cooks who can spoil the broth. But I think it can work as well, it can be a good impulse for investments and improvements, mostly regarding infrastructure. And it can kickstart growth regarding sports facilities and participation. And it can be excellent marketing still. With good planning and non-megalomaniac spending strengthening already existing structures, it's definitely possible to emerge as a winner. But it's hard for sure. And the IOC always wins anyway and gets most of the profit, which sucks for cities (and the athletes)
I want Germany to host again in 2040 or 2044. Either in Hamburg or Cologne (it would be the entire Rhine-Ruhr agglomeration then). I think it's worth the risk - unless Berlin gets to host, then we are fucked because Berlin never gets anything done on time and at the planned price ... let alone in good quality
>>
>>152358848
It'd be cool to tour all the abandoned Olympic stadiums around the world, but I wouldn't want to have to pay all those billions for something that's getting used for a few weeks and then being left to rot forever
>>
>>152358503
South Africa never hosted the Olympics
And there are plenty of cities who have profited from Olympic Games because of overall marketing/tourism boosts, infrastructure improvements, and the sports facilities. You just have to be sustainable and not retarded. But you are right, this is increasingly hard in this grift world. Especially because the IOC is greedy as fuck and has tons of expensive rules in place to ensure their asses get pampered
>>
>>152358823
yes it's fine to call OP and Olathe and Lenexa generic suburban cities but it's wrong to call the kansas side the "worst side" because honestly there's no where in kansas as bad as the area around troost, paseo, etc.
>>
>>152359262
i would blame that more on long term planning failures of the city hosting them than the ioc themselves. and im not trying to argue the ioc isnt greedy or corrupt as fuck. but many countries/cities have been able to leverage the opportunity of hosting the olympics into grass roots funding for sports development. barcelona, sydney, nagano, vancouver, turin are all places that had a positive impact from hosting the olympics, but people will always be quick to point to montreal or sochi as proof of concrete failure.
>>
>>152359262
Very true in general, there is way too much waste.
But that's mostly the problem if states want to host the Olympics just for clout. Qatar for example also wants to have them. But just like it's too small to handle 12 large stadiums needed for a World Cup once the tournament is over, it can't handle all these Olympic facilities. They don't care, though. They would let most stuff decay afterward. Even though things like the Olympic Village can easily be turned into nice living space, and even many sports facilities could be transformed if you plan it right. The best thing obviously is having a lot in place already and only refurbishing things if that's needed. That's the plan of Cologne/Rhine-Ruhr for example. To name an example: the city of Aachen is like an hour away from Cologne, it is called the world capital of equestrian sports and has the largest (non-racing) stadium for horse sports in the world. So they would hold the horse stuff there.
The Olympic area is one of the nicest parts of Munich, and basically everything sports-related still is in use. The 1972 Games definitely helped Munich a lot - despite the ... unforeseen mishappening during the actual event. Berlin is similar, although the facilities are very old now. I can't talk for other countries, but there must be other examples
The problem mostly is that the IOC makes it expensive as fuck to get VIP treatment, and they bag most of the profit. That leaves too many autocratic shitholes without actual sports culture or plans to use everything beyond the event competing for the Olympics. The other end of the deal is the planners themselves. If they are incompetent, the entire thing can be ruined rather quickly. Unfortunately, the IOC seems to downright demand dumbass plans sometimes

You have to plan right. And you have to WANT to plan it right. Then it's a big boost that's worth the money
>>
>>152355475
I understand why one middle of the country city had to be picked, I do not understand how KC was picked over Denver. Denver’s infrastructure to support a massive surge in tourism and demand is infinitely higher than KC’s having lived and worked in both. Neither city is itself remarkable but Denver is right next to the Rocky Mountains and world-renowned nature tourism, KC is next to farmland. None of this makes any sense. The airport difference alone should have disqualified KC.
>>
>>152360168
KC was willing to pay more in bribes

That's how selections like this work
>>
Middle America is a fucking waste, there should only be 5 or 6 megacities in America and everyone else should be moved there at gunpoint. Robots can do all the farming now.

It would be better for sports too since teams wouldn't have to travel and you could have real cross town rivalries, in both pro sports and college. Everyone would have better access to facilities, no one living in the middle of nowhere.
>>
>>152356584

Has Germany ever hosted an Olympics that wasn't massively controversial for some reason? 1936 had le based and redpilled man, 1972 had le based and redpilled terrorism...if I was the IOC, I might just refuse to let Germany ever host it again.

We are victims of the circumstances. 1936 was good, but then everybody decided it was too much later on. So 1972 was supposed to be a giant kumbaya singing session where everyone hugs each other so that no one but that feels uncomfortable … but then that got exploited
Third time‘s a charm. We will either nail it or end the world
