You can recognize someone is better than you and still hold him to standards - especially if that person earns loads of money and is hailed as an exemplary role model by the public as well. It's also your right to have an opinion on people involved with things you hold dear in general. Most people will both criticize and praise players depending on the situation, and both sides are completely fine. People genuinely considering an athlete beneath themselves is not the norm.
