Do sports coaches actually do anything? Like do soccer coaches really do anything any punter couldn't do themselves? Everything I've seen of them is they just give the teams encouragement and tell them not to screwup.

You're just used to AFL where coaching is completely irrelevant. In non-penal sports we have actual strategy and you adjust in game

One time a baseball team owner with a flair for promotions and gimmicks let the fans manage a game for one day, giving them "Yes" or "No" cards to hold up as a votes when prompted for certain actions. The owner of the opposing team (who was also their manager) actually joined in on the fun. The home crowd won 5-3, snapping a four game losing streak

At best, usually when they get smoke up their ass like they do in football here they actively make the teams worse

I could probably do a better job than most of them honestly

They are similar to personal trainers, their only function is to tell people to do things they already know they need to do.

Sounds like something Bill Veeck would have done

Because it was literally Bill Veeck's Browns against Connie Mack's Athletics

Coaches werent a thing until the 80s. They were gym teachers who supervised physical training. Team captains mantained tactical order and regulated intensity in the field. But then TV needed drama and manufactured so called geniuses and master strategists.

Do film directors actually do anything? Like, could a director really do anything any professional actor couldn't manage themselves? Everything I've seen of them is they just give the actors encouragement and tell them not to miss their mark or mess up their lines.
