I never had high hopes of seeing Flamengo beat PSG. Honestly, I don’t even think the Brazilian national team could beat PSG if they were fully rested and had all their main players available. What bothers me the most is the wasted potential. It would be one thing if Flamengo had done everything right to prepare for this situation.

“Our number 9 is injured. Let’s sign a decent replacement from a decent place.”
“Let’s sign younger players. Our team is getting too old. Most of our main players are already over 30.”
“We are the richest club in South America. We should have a strong scouting system that produces decent players almost every year.”

I understand that any promising young player will eventually be sold to Europe. Ryan from Vasco won’t even play until mid 2026 and the same goes for Allan from Palmeiras. I can accept a technical gap compared to european teams but a physical gap? I know that Brazil is basically a country with 0 nonwhites but surely FLA could've signed some young niggas with decent technique and able to run really fucking fast. Plata was probably Flamengo’s best player on the field and that’s what bothers me the most. I don’t understand this thing with strikers where their main qualities are helping to defend. Why not just play an extra defensive midfielder or a wingback instead? Samuel Lino is the same shit. I can’t really blame Bruno Henrique. This nigga is almost 40 and he was still one of the players who ran the most.

This match answered the question:
"Why did Arrascaeta never play for a european club? He’s easily the best player in South America right now!"

Inferior than the 8-12 best teams in the world? Yes. The 6 best br teams can rival:
- Most english teams excluding Arsenal, Liverpool, City and Chelsea.
- All of the german teams excluding Bayern.
- All of the spanish teams excluding RM and Barça.
- All of the italian teams.
- All of the french teams excluding PSG.

I think there is a mismatch of selective pressures that put Brazilian teams in a very difficult spot. Arrascaeta is a great example of that, really.
A player who is both physically and technically impressive, let's use Rayan as an example, will naturally get the interest of European clubs and won't come back until he's in his 30s at the very least. That's the type of player the top European clubs go for. Fast, healthy, good stamina and skilled. The medium clubs in Europe field 11 pacy shitters because it's impossible to compete without the matching physicality but they can't afford the pacy players who are actually good. That was evident in the Fluminense v Dortmund game for the CWC. The German side was built to match the pace of the European game, but none of their players were actually good.

But back to Arrascaeta, down here we aren't afflicted by the pace madness that is European football. Whether it is because of money, cultural and historical reasons, or as veteran players who come back often say, a combination of schedule and weather, it is a fact that South American football is slower. No matter how good he is, a caramujo bichado like Arrascaeta won't shine against the shittiest Europa League team that can press at a high intensity. He can't run and has poor stamina. But in South America pressing isn't as intense and he's one of the best players around. When you see a more intense player, he's like Canobbio or Plata. Runs a lot all game, is helpful, but not as game changing as Arrascaeta or another lento bichado like Pedro. All constraints considered, our clubs will naturally try to form the best squads they can in the context of South American football. And it works. It wins you titles here. But there is a critical mismatch for games against Europeans where intense pressing will take any of our craques bichados out of the game. But it's just one game. You can't build a squad around that.
