Magic and Bird should have a greater claim. But for me it's those 3. Plus Bill Russell and Wilt maybe bit it was a different era. Its pre-1980 and post 1980.
>>152567772Jordan's the GOAT cause he carried the league out of the dodgy 80s era where between the cocaine and sex scandals had become a bit of an adults only after dark league into a kid-friendly marketable league, a game you could take the kids to. Cool athletic shoes kids and adults alike can wear. Numbers and accolades can be argued, you have guys like Kareem, Wilt, Bird, Magic, Lebron, Shaq and Kobe all put up great numbers, all pushed the game that level up, from medium sized gyms between the Midwest and New England to a global sport second only to Football in popularity. But Jordan was most important because he was a clean cut guy who kept his scandals under wraps, his team was right in John Hughes country during the peak of John Hughes and it was a big step away from the Showtime Lakers a team of swingers in a city of sex and drugs, the only clean one, an overly wordy black muslim convert with that WNYC/KPCC dual donor energy and the Celtics, a team that drafted a guy who ODed on cocaine the night after the draft and added acid eater Bill Walton to their cast for a season or two. Kobe and Shaq, Lebron they all expanded on it and made it a game of the world. Kareem took the game from 10,000 seat stadiums to 20,000 seat stadiums and primetime games on network TVWilt, Russell and West took it from an obscure sport in a few big cities with harsh winters into a real pro sport up there with baseball and football. Mikan he was the first one, the guy good enough to establish the league as something local newspapers followed, that there would be a camera at the game and men putting the stats somewhere for safe-keeping as opposed to the early games just being lost. Jordan is the GOAT, he took it from something that was once a week on CBS to something you could see every night if you had basic cable, he took it from a cocaine circus with a backstage similar to a Motley Crue show to a family destination of bobbleheads and t-shirt cannons.
