Just stop adjusting lottery odds at all. Wait until after the first playoff round, exclude all remaining playoff teams, and give everyone else even odds. That way mid teams that are hovering around the 8 seed aren't discouraged from actually playing their way in, and shameless dumpster fires don't get rewarded for being shit on purpose. Frankly the real problem is the draft. If American sports got rid of the draft and rookie contracts it would solve a lot of these problems. You can't be like "the Hornets are being insincere with playing these young role players" or "I think Anthony Davis could still do 34 minutes and lead a 20 point comeback against the Lakers, he knows the ins and outs of that offense better than most."

At least in our sports it makes sense both because big-time college athletics was already established and players peak a little later than they do in soccer. In the NFL/MLB there are exactly zero 18-year-olds per yearly age cohort who can meaningfully contribute to a team, NBA/NHL might give you one Wembanyama/Bedard per year.

In soccer I think you have more of a chance to play against pros and be good at that age, Alphonso Davies is the big success story of someone coming up through an MLS academy but a lot of the top kids will try to go to Europe. The draft still exists but it's mostly a place for future Joe Nobody MLS lifers who want to get accounting degrees
