Everything is arbitrary though, meritocracy is a fantasy, it's simply supply and demand. A select few sports command attention and generate revenues to make money even with absurd wages, and competing teams want to draw further attention by attracting the most talent. Top footballers get paid millions sure, but go down a few leagues and you're not far off minimum wage. And even top rugby players basically get paid average wages for 10 years and half are left with broken bodies and life changing injuries by the time they get churned out. When you get to field hockey and other niche sports, it's basically all amateur. Maybe it's not fair, but nothing is.
