It is because there is a shared identity in watching a sport team, or an indication that you are geographically from that area, it is basic tribalism.However, if you have none of that, why bother. If that is all they talk about, I would just stop talking to them. The only good thing about College football or basketball is that season pass holders separate wagies with CEO and VP and is possible to "network" with other people. However even the wagie have to be middle class and have some sort of disposable income.
