>>152707176I used to like cross-country skiing as a wee one, we lived near a running track that was converted into a skiing course during the winter. Then I went to do my national service and I've never enjoyed skiing since. Having to ski with full kit, rifle, helmet and dragging an ahkio full of platoon gear through knee-high snow on skis that felt like snowboards was such a kick in the balls that I have concentrated on alpine ever since.

>>152708317I remember watching videos in the late 90s/early 2000s about some dude going to Colorado or someplace, getting really up on a mountain (like "jump off a helicopter" high) and skiing through chest-deep snow, dropping off cliffs, going through ravines, busting through snowdrifts etc. with ambient music playing and kept thinking that 1) that would be really fucking awesome to try and 2) no way in hell would I do that without the camera helicopter/rescue crew ready to pick me up if I wiped out and got injured. And that was during my "feeling immortal" stage of alpine skiing.
