Obviously, I wouldn't expect this to be a common event, because any player who attacked a ref on the field/pitch/court/etc would be banned from the league for life and also face prosecution. Refs should be classed as players for the purposes of liability, so they can be tackled, pushed etc but in return, they get to carry a low-powered taser for if things get out of hand.

Refs have gotten way too cocky and act like they own the place, players need to put their place once in a while and remind them that just as 99% of refs were bullied nerds in school, having a whistle and some cards doesn't mean they're not still nerds who deserve to suffer at the hands of the popular kids.
