It's quite famous that amongst the notable English football league clubs, only Port Vale don't take their name from a geographic place at all And yet across the border in Scotland there's loads of teams that don't? Celtic, Rangers, Hibs, St Mirren, St Johnstone, Raith Rovers etc etcHow come?
Celtic and Rangers are officially called Glasgow Celtic and Glasgow Rangers. But I don't think Keith is a place, nor Buckie Thistle.
>>152886520gonna be honest i did the captcha as soon as i entered the thread, thinking id have a response by the time i was done. However, I don't. May as well post something thoughGood luck with the thread
>>152886542You been on the cans lad
Queen of the South is a great name
England's population exploded with industrialization. All the working class people just name their club City FC. They don't have time to think about names. Scotland still had real humans (non-urban) who put a name on a club
There is no place called Arsenal
>>152886542At least say Roath Ravers like OP did.>>152886553He's been on the Buckie.
>>152886792The building complex that housed The Royal Arsenal (whose members founded the football club) was also known by the same name.
>>152886520From now on I will only refer to The Celtic Football Club as "The Celtic Football Club"
What part of Rangers is everyone from? For me, it's Sevco Street.

>>152891757the top 3 are all areas of a city and Swansea is a city
>>152889909Forest Green is a neighbourhood of Nailsworth near Stroud in Gloucestershire. They renamed as Stroud FC for a couple of years in the 90s for some reason
>>152886520It can be hyperfocused geographics, for example Perth used to be called St Johnston which is where the football team takes it name from. There's no "Glasgow FC" and seemingly no team wanted to pretend to represent all the demographics there, so for example "Celtic" is named for the Irish minority in the city.On the other hand you've got Dundee FC and Dundee United FC which is a much more 'English' naming culture. It looks like the latter might have been called 'Hibernian' instead, maybe if not for Hibs in Edinburgh being a historically bigger club.I really like this naming culture. Nowadays no matter what sport it is, any new team inevitably uses the American naming culture - e.g. like the Perth Piledrivers. It's gay and stupid.
Then what the fuck is Port Vale? It sounds like a place though
>>152896499They're from Stoke and it's because of all the inland ports on the Trent & Mersey Canal
The area has a load of canals in valleys so its like Valley of Ports. It was called Burslem Port Vale once upon a time, Burslem is an area of Stoke.
