It's been a football (divegrass, not handegg) thing for decades. If the NFL has only recently started doing it, it must be another of these weird cultural crossovers that sports are doing now to appeal to fans of other sports, like how our football now has referees wearing a microphone to explain VAR decisions to the crowd, and footballers from the 1970s dying from CTE.
