I feel like the reason that we don't see NFL teams bought or sold very often isn't because owners don't want to sell them, but because no one wants to buy them.
It costs minimum six billion dollars to buy an NFL team, and no one with that kind of money wants to bankrupt themselves to own an NFL team. So realistically you need at least ten billion dollars. That's 123 people in the United States since the rules say you need to buy it as an individual or family.
Of those 123 people, you can't count the people who already own one, so it's less than a hundred people.
Then you've gotta remember that it's an objectively atrocious investment. If you buy the Detroit Lions, you traded six billion dollars for $20m profit per year. If you bought every McDonald's in Michigan instead, you'd make about $800m per year.
That's also ignoring the fact that team values are currently hyper, hyper inflated because of gambling, which has a very uncertain future since public opinions of it are pretty negative. Maybe it'll stay legal forever, but the kind of person who has six billion dollars might not want to risk it on that speculation.
I think the NFL isn't an exclusive club that turns away new members, I think it's a poor value club people aren't stupid enough to join.

but remember the amount of people who bought when prices were low, they always think the next boom is coming
Jerruh, Jeff Lurie, Robert Kraft... these guys bought in at a much lower level and now the teams are worth exponentially more
They think there's a chance value will just keep going up and up- Are they delusional? They seemed that way when they bought them way back then too, and now the price is through the roof

I just can't foresee a future where the Patriots and Cowboys are worth a hundred billion unless we have 1000% inflation

>Unless we have 1000% inflation
I'm afraid I've got some bad news

Inflation has been fairly stable the past few years, it was only nuts during Covid

If I had say $40 billion or more I would absolutely buy the Patriots as a prestige item and to control my favourite team. I'd also buy the Celtics and Red Sox
