Why is tennis scored in the increments it is? 15, 30, 40, then end of set.

And why do you have to score twice in a row to win a set?

There's an old story (true or bullshit, I've never really looked into it) about the score being kept on an old clock next to the court at one point. Moving the hands at quarter intervals was visually obvious.
And like a lot of sports in that family (and similar game/set systems), you winning by two clear points and not just because it was your serving advantage/going first or similar is seen as fairer, or perhaps more demonstrative of your dominance and skill.

You’re talking about “games” not sets. No one really knows why the scoring is. You don’t have to win two points in a row to win a game, if the score is 40-30 for example and you win the point you win the game. You maybe talking about the advantage rule, where if a game goes to 40-40 you do need to win 2 points in a row. Not sure why but it’s kino. I guess 2 points means they use both sides of the court and they don’t have to awkwardly decide which side to start the deciding point in. They have experimented with removing this rule but the players need to choose with side for the final point and it’s lame.

you have to endure an 80 hour jork session with her first. No breaks, no water, and you must remain erect the entire time

Yeah, that's correct. If you're at 40 and the opponent is at 15 and they win a rally then you can still win by scoring the next point. It's just when the 40-40 hits that someone needs a double score to win.

I was running through the scenarios where someone is on game point and what the winning combination would be in each of them and it kept coming back to "having to score twice in a row" because I couldn't picture it properly.

That must be a different Zimbabwean. I only make posts calling female players ugly in the WTA tennis thread.

The sport was created by an Argentinian economist.
