Memphis is the most violent city in the USA and coincidentally also the niggest. Obviously there's no correlation there but it's an interesting fact.

Kind of crazy that players have next to no power in this stuff. Imagine being in a training room in LA or something (the way I see it, LA is a shithole for normal people, but heaven for rich people) and then being told "you're going to Memphis tomorrow btw, bye"
After all, the city normally plays a certain role in transfer decisions. Players here often feel more attracted to cities like Hamburg or Munich than to smaller and/or uglier places like Wolfsburg or Heidenheim. I guess money and sportive perspective come first, but who doesn't want to live in a nice city? Especially if you're not alone

Do 'grass players always get a say in transfers of contracts? In the States they just tell you that you've been traded to the Veldt and you're just going to live around the blackest gorillas you've ever seen, and you have like 72 hours to report.

It's a mystery.

In your sports, the league itself negotiates as well, right? That's not the case in any European football league. Players and their agents can definitely greatly influence negotiations. They are the deciding factor, even. It kind of depends on how hard of a bargain the player side and the clubs drive, and how far they are apart. That depends on the contract situation then. If a contract is running out soon and the player wants to leave, the club will try to sell him for as much as possible in the last transfer window of the contract. Some clubs may offer a lot more than others, the clubs obviously prefer the highest bidder most of the time. But if the player doesn't want to go there, he has a good chance at getting his way, especially if the contract is close to running out and the club is desperate to make any money. If the contract is long, the club can just say "fuck off, you're staying here unless we get a fat offer we like. Either that or you're sitting on the sideline for as long as we want"
Players usually leave this stuff to their agent, but they will often have clear preferences based on the offered salaries, the perspective (does the club play international competitions as well? Will I be a key player? What is the manager's plan with me?), and the location/city

compared to soccer, the NBA is an 82 game schedule in a much bigger country. You're just constantly on the road all the time, so I don't think it's typical for the guys to care that much about where they live if it's not an obvious destination city like LA, Miami, NY etc.

That's true, but I think the difference begins in the franchise approach already
But yeah, it really makes a difference. If the club hasn't made it to the international stage, you will usually play once a week, switching between home games and away games. Except for the breaks in winter and summer. But then and in between, you will mostly train ... mostly in your city, although a part of season prep is often in training camps elsewhere. So it is kind of important. Hamburg to Munich is 9 hours by car, 5 hours by train, and 75 minutes of pure flight time
