And whenever somebody brings up his performance in Game 7 vs the Nuggets somebody dismisses it with "13 assists doe".I already personally consider many assists to be "inflated" not in the sense that "players get more assists nowadays cuz more possessions! etc etc." because that doesnt actually matter in this specific game. This game answered a question I had had for a while now "why dont people use percentage of a teams points contributed more to credit stars?" and its because of games like this. Yes, Harden has 13 assists this game, but even if we make zero judgements about the quality of assists, he contributed nearly 40% of his teams points...but thats because they scored 101 points. That isnt good. He essentially "contributed more" by virtue of his teams offense being bad, and by virtue of him only scoring 7 points, even if the assists arguably (we'll get to that) made up for it, because in terms of points off assists? He contributed 27 points off his assists. This is another stat I now consider flawed.I couldnt figure this out at first "How could a guy so clearly contribute so many points and them not be valuable?" The instinct is to blame teammates, but Harden is supposed to be one of the greatest floor raisers ever, a guy that makes bigs better.But this game. Zubac went 5 for 10. For a big man, thats not ideal, especially when Peyton Watson went 4 for 4. He made 1 less shot than Zubac while taking 6 less shots. And its not like Zubac is being guarded by an elite rim protector...Running out of space so this is to be continued...

Continuing...Personally, looking at Hardens assists. There are only 8, I would consider "legit" assists where his teammate didnt have to dribble to the basket or into a shot. A lot of his legit assists came off of doubles too. Whether that matters is still up to debate, but it will be relevant. 8 out of 13 legit assists does this matter? To figure out this conundrum I looked at Jokics assists by contrast. They were much more dynamic than Harden's, while most of Harden's came out of doubles. Many of Jokic's came out of transition, hit ahead passes. Another thing to note. Is that save for the two 3s Jokic assisted on. ALL his assists were shots within 4 feet of the basket.Basically Jokics assists resulted in some of the easiest shots possible. Transition offense is the most efficient for reasons I hopefully dont have to explain. The problem is that transition offense is so less frequent than half court offense. Which means you have to take advantage of every transition opportunity you get for offense, which is something Jokic seemingly did.If we look at points off assists? Jokic contributed to 20. Add this to his 16 points, ans he contributed 36 points. One less than Harden, and still a lesser percentage of his teams points than Harden, since the nuggets score 120.So the problem still isnt solved...until I did a little thought experiment. What if you take 2 shots from MPJ, Aaron Gordon, Braun, and Watson?Thats 4 x 4 = 16 points.The nuggets won by 19. They still win without those points, but assuming that Jokics 8 assists didnt exist, the game is a lot closer.You might be saying "why dont you do that for Harden"and heres where the theory comes in: If you look at Hardens assists again closely. I mentioned how a lot of his assists had players dribbling into their shot or to the basket. Why does that matter?
How boring is the league. There is no best team, they all beat on each other because all the teams are mediocre. I think the Amazon deal was the last nail in the coffin of the NBA. Basically a majority of the assists Harden dished out, were shots the players would have taken and made anyway, whether Harden passed them the ball or not. Jokic generated shots that shouldnt be easy, shouldnt be free, shots that should be rare "out of nowhere" he generated shots those players normally wouldnt get, and therefore added to their capacity to make shots. Whereas Harden is simply a "part" of the shot, hes not creating shots they otherwise would have gotten.Its not like this is a study, or this is backed by any objective data, not like thats really possible, the thing Im talking about is something that Data cant really capture.I'm just hypothesizing.Especially because Hardens teammates already werent very efficient (and neither was himself) which shouldn't make sense with how many assists he dished out.It also explains how Kawhi was only 1 shot away from 50% fg. Because most of his shots were likely self generated. The problem with Kawhi this game is, he simply didnt take enough shots. Which also doesnt make sense again, because Harden was getting doubled constantly. Which is why I think this theory explains all of that. And why I said harden getting doubled might be relevant. I cant prove how much it matters, but its part of some of the biggest differences between his and Harden's assists.
