Lmao, 6% of the UK is "built on" (roads, pavement, buildings), and ~1-2% is buildings.

The problem is we have no manufacturing base anymore because the Conservatives ripped it apart and outsourced it, and NIMBYs make building new things impossible and lock it behind years of red tape and appeals.

Also Boomers hate everything and want to make it even worse for younger generation, so people aren't alllowed to work from home and have to move to major cities.

Also UK wages are significantly better than most of Europe

Immigration should be and is a right leaning policy (doesn't help right-wingers use it as anti-left)

Immigration lowers wages and the quality of life of said country. Left should be against those things. Right should really like immigration since it keeps wages low and businesses flourishing

It was always a protest vote against immigration in general. The anti-Brexit lobby did countless surveys where they asked Brexit voters what they wanted, and their answers were completely unrelated to what Brexit was about.

Also, I'm not seeing any increase in immigration where I live, and I live in a shithole. Allegedly, Boris Johnson brought them all in to replace the Europeans who left (the non-white influx since 2019 is regularly called the "Boriswave"), but the main issue is that we have no asylum system and no police left due to budget cuts, so nobody applies legally any more and they all just pay people-traffickers to smuggle everyone in.

You moron, COVID wasn't a concern before 2020.

Our electoral system is designed to make us a two-party state, but the two main parties are so awful that obscure meme parties are dabbing on them daily. Reform are the main one because retards tend to be right-wing and retards are the biggest group, but the Green Party are preaching based economic revolution and it's wiping Labour out too. The only upside to a two-party system is that the winner can move quickly and pass laws without having to make deals, and the polling is now indicating that we no longer have that. That's good news for the Russians, of course.

There are elections for EU representatives pretty often, and all EU citizens get to vote in those elections.

Its this attitude that arose in the long preamble to the vote that turned so many people against the EU. You were making threats before people had made their mind up.

Old Labour MP who got shanked by the rightwing Labour clique (Mandelson, Smith, Brown, Blair) in the late 1980s/early 1990s, challenged the rightwing John Smith for Labour Party leadership in 1992.
They were annoyed that he was a socialist (not a 'far/hard left' type like Benn/Corbyn) and big mad that he was a eurosceptic.

I voted remain for economic reasons but couldn't believe the rhetoric the EU were coming out with to chip away at the undecided voters.

To be fair to the EU, Cameron asked them to be doom-mongers.
He thought that like he did in his wins in the 2011 AV referendum, 2014 indyref, and 2015 general election all he had to do was say that "look how bad and scary things will be if you don't do what I tell you!"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CJbDz0ffjY
The big problems in 2016 for Cameron were 1) that he didn't have the newspapers behind him, and 2) if leaving is such a catastrophic and economically suicidal thing to do, why are you giving voters the options to do it in the first place?
>>

The last thing I want to do is defend Merkel, but what did she supposedly say?
No doubt the EU is a great evil. But from afar, it looks like you aren't off better now. In an ideal world, we'd have something like the EEC in an expanded form - a mostly economic forum that allows for easier trade and travel, with some agreements on laws. And not this bureaucratic behemoth filled with megalomaniacs that don't even get elected but think they can tell us about democracy
>>

Well yes personally I'd be more than happy with that.
I forget what was said 10years ago now. But Cameron came looking for something he could take back to his MPs and thr public and say "look the EU wants us to stay and theyve offered us this"
We were the 2nd biggest contributor and the cynic in me thinks France and Germany saw a chance to get a lot more political power in the Eu by removing a major player.

The reactions in Germany were that of devastation. Firstly, it meant Germany being an even bigger contributor - that sucked. It meant trade with the UK becoming more difficult - that sucked for an export-focused economy like ours. Our economic representatives were in despair when this happened. And the general populace was usually distraught by the partially anti-German rhetoric (which the media of course made sure to show everyone here), as they often thought that we and the UK were friends now. So the EU level tried to make it look like the UK was spitting Germany specifically in the face - and not the EU. So that people would take it more personally
I don't think anyone in the German political landscape thought getting rid of the UK was good. Economy people even less so. Many of our politicians are genuine dreamers (to put it as positively as I can) who imagine the EU as the wonderfully green meadow we all dance on, hand in hand. They are too idealistic and deluded to think someone should be kicked out there. Even before you get to actual economic arguments
>>
>>153398501
he's right tho. the EU is obsessed about trying to get ukraine into their sphere of influence, same with the usa with ukraine. But again, even if the west hadn't done that, russia would have bribed their way into imposing ukrainian leaders willing to submit to russia.
