When you look at the other big clubs in Brazil, they are all from the 4 biggest cities in the country. Makes sense. But then you have Santos FC, who is from the 56th largest city. But they've become a legendary club with players like Neymar and Pele. How did they do it?
there's a huge gap between Pelé and Neymar.
>>153436714You're right. Neymar didn't avoid playing in Europe's tough competition and didn't hide in Brazil only playing against banana farmers and common thieves.
>>153436911South America had better clubs than Europe until the 1970s/80s.
>>153436911the difference between Europe and South America was very small till the end of 90s. Romario left Barcelona for Flamengo right after winning the World Cup and being elected player of the year by FIFA in 94.
>>153436911Maybe that Santos had a good team, idkModern Santos is a bad team
>>153436911>banana farmers and common thieveskek
Santos is the biggest city in SP coast. Is it small compared to capitals? Sure, but its not really irrelevant, its in a strategic place. Also they got luck with Pele. Its easier to "make football" as we say here in Santos than in some capitals like Vitoria, Campo Grande, São Luís, Manaus etc.
>>153439079Kind of sounds like the Green Bay Packers in the NFL. Of the 154 teams in the Big 5 American sports leagues, Green Bay is the smallest city and it's not even remotely close. The reason they're still relevant is because 1) They had lots of great players in their early days and won lots of Championships and 2) The whole state of Wisconsin supports them strongly.
>>153436493greenbay is good at football because greenbay was good at football
>>153436493the municipality of Santos has to share a small island with another city, São Vicente. If you count the entire Santos metropolitan area, where Santos is easily the only relevant team, there's easily over a million people. The area around Santos, the Baixada Santista, was one of the first areas to be colonised in Brazil, but their growth was severely limited because the coastal strip is extremely narrow, and only a few kilometers from the coast there are steep hills, and after that there are the highlands where São Paulo is located. This image should be particularly enlightening; below is Cubatão, an industrial town in Santos' metropolitan area (and once the most polluted town in the world.) Above in the distance you can see the metropolitan area of São Paulo.Even then, the population density in the Santos metropolitan area is higher than in São Paulo's.Santos also kicks way above its population because it's Brazil's most important port, as it is the main port of Brazil's richest state.
>>153436493'Eritage and pashun
>>153442123Also in Santos, 95% of people support Santos, while other cities have to share supporters between 3+ teams
>>153436493Don’t forget Godrygo
>>153436911Pelé beat eurogutans at national and club level several times
>>153436493Simple, exactly because they were a small city club they had to rely more on homegrown talents, Pelé gave them international recognition and they capitalized on that. However, they havent produced a sigle good player after Neymar and as a result they have fallen off terribly.
>>153436714There was robinho and some other players in the middle of that>>153436911Retard>>153447702Santos is actually 43%>>153447766Rodrygo
>>153436493It was the biggest club in the world in the 1960s. In terms of historical reputation they are huge.Even since then they've produced incredible players.
>>153447766they did rodrygokaio jorgeyuri albertobut not neymar level of course, the best youngsters in the country now is palmeiras
>>153442123Reminds me of La Guaira and Caracas.
>>153436714Not that much. Neymar was a top shelf talent. When he was good he was the best. Refs shouldve protected him more, he was the epitome of joga bonito.
>>153460758i mean period gap. Santos was non existent between Pelé and Nerman.
>>153436714Pelé was playing against slaves.
>>153436957Pele would have been snapped in half by 90% of First Division defenders in England.
>>153436911trvthnuke pelecucks are seething but this is the truth, not even the libertadores was that relevant in it's first few years even argenchinos began boycotting It at the end of the 60s
>>153436911The government actually barred Pelé from being transferred at the time
>>153471604The rest of the world should have considered not pitching slaves to play then
