Sweeping can add 50cm to the distance and can shift the stone left or right by 5-10 cm (depending on which side you sweep relative to the curl).The sweeping is what makes curling into a true team game, because unlike petanque, lawnbowl etc, you can influence the stones trajectory in-flight and doing that is a true team effort.The person throwing and the person holding the aim point try to assess the trajectory while the people sweeping try to estimate the speed, and together decided if and how much sweeping to get the result they want.The really good teams even have a backup plans if the stone is judged to be too fast or too slow, or too off-course, they make a snap decision to sweep it differently to still get a beneficial outcome even if the stone didn't end up where initially planned.
