Those athletes would LOVE to get into a lesser-known sport and continue competing, finding some other niche. And quite a few do, which is a big reason why we have black winter athletes. SO many of the sliding sports one come out of track. But there's not more because, unlike the big league sports, being good enough isn't enough to secure the funding and support to train and compete. No one who could potentially go to the Olympics turns it down because they might maybe walk onto an NFL team. They just simply don't have access to the downhill skiing pipeline.
