Why? Germany and Brazil were two favorites clashing. In ice hockey, which is way less balanced than football, everyone knew Canada is a super-heavy title favorite (only rivaled by the US) while France is a team of mostly nobodies

Not even close. First off this is only group stages, not the semi finals. Secondly, France has virtually zero expectations (I think) while Canada are the favorites. Last, hockey is definitely not Frances most important sport

It would be comparable if it were something like Sweden beating Canada by that score in the semis. But also Canada would need to be hosting, and hockey would need to be as popular of a sport as soccer.
