What killed it?
>>
The structure of the sport killed it. Any "team" sport where one player holds all the power is doomed to being shit.

Not evolving the sport. They never expected humans to get this big and this powerful but the writing has been on the wall for years. Extend 3 point line, raise basket to 11 feet. Also get rid of the 3 point foul and foul is always 2.

It really does need a commissioner with the balls to overhaul the sport, and not just keep putting retarded bandaids on it that aren't even bandaids but just dumb cashgrabs. My big 3 fixes would be
1. Turn each game into a best of 5 of 12 minute sets. Would make earlier parts of games actually matter, since as it stands it's just 46 minutes of back and forth endless no-defense statpadding until they buckle down in the final 2 minutes
2. All penalties are 1 FT AND possession. The aforementioned buckling down is really just teams intentionally breaking the rules of the sport 40 times and then praying for missed FTs, which baffles the mind that it's never been addressed.
3. Do SOMETHING about the 3 point spam. Moving lines back is the easy choice, while my fix is a bit too autistic and arcadey probably. Each team gets a limited amount of 3 pt ATTEMPTs a set before everything after turns into a 2. Home team advantage means they get to choose the limit for sets 1/3/5
>>
Nothing. It's not dead. Come April-June people will be talking about the playoffs as usual. This shit happens every year, there's no reason to care about the regular season but people will still care about the playoffs. Honestly they need to go to a soccer type schedule where they only play 1-2 times a week. Only problem is picking a day for that since half their season overlaps with college football and the NFL weekends

It's a fundamentally flawed sport to begin with that has been adulterated into the worst possible version of itself

For one thing, the primary objective is just too easy. In baseball, hockey, football, soccer, etc. scoring is not a given. You can get shut out. In basketball every team scores 40 or 50 times per game even if they suck. Individual possessions do not matter. The game becomes monotonous and repetitive and the statistics are voluminous but meaningless. So and so scores 15 points and gets 5 rebounds? Well, someone has to.

And the league decided a long time ago to lean into the strict "any contact is a foul" interpretation of the rules so they could dole out free points ad nauseam which leads to terrible pacing, players having to sit out long stretches of games, and the referees being able to completely swing any given game any direction they want. The NFL could be like this and call two dozen holding penalties per game but they understand it's not what people want. The NBA doesn't care what people want. They'd rather force their chosen narratives down people's throats.

And then there's the multitude of more modern issues. 3 pointers are mathematically broken and turned everything into a neverending memechucking parade. Fully guaranteed deals give players too much leverage and leave teams with almost no remedy if shit goes wrong. Owners have no restraint and overbid for players at every opportunity. Teams throw away entire seasons for slightly better lottery odds. The playoffs got expanded when the first round was already a joke. It just goes on and on. It's a sport has been doing everything wrong for a long time.

I've not cared about the playoffs in years. My dad still watches, but I don't and almost none of my friends have cared for years either.

The sport isn't flawed. It can be very competitive as seen during the 90s, every change since then has been for the worse and also Silver enabling black laziness has turned the league into a waste of time.
>>
>>153495627
Yeah good call about the tanking but not sure how NFL stops tanking but copy that.

maybe just make the shot worth 2.5 pts.

It's literally wwe tier right now, the sport is so fucking boring that the "people" that still follow it prefer talking about retarded drama than the actual games.

It was at least watchable in the 90s but there was plenty of fuckery back then, too. The Jordan era was actually the origin of a lot of the modern problems because that's when they decided to lean completely into the starfucking that leads to selective rule enforcement.

And I will never not think that the foul / free throw system isn't inherently flawed. It leads to constant neverending stoppages in what's supposed to be a fast-paced games, it allows officials to award points to either team on a whim, at any given moment as often as they like, and they can force any player out of any game with minimal effort. Even if the calls are semi-legit bringing the game to a screeching hat every two minutes is bad but what's worse is how easily such a system is to exploit.

An NBA ref was openly rigging games and shaving pooitns by his own admission for years and the only thing that stopped it was him getting arrested. The league itself pretended like it wasn't an issue, which they could do because his blatantly fraudulent officiating didn't look different than what normally happened during games. Donaghy wasn't even the official during some of the cheesiest, most suspiciously reffed games of his era. He's just the one guy who got caught. The guys who were supposedly on the level were consistently as bad or worse than the guy we KNOW had ulterior motives, so what do you think that means? You can only get away with this shit in a game where the rules are fucked to begin with because otherwise even the most gullible pleb would see through the bullshit.

The NFL doesn't have to stop tanking because it doesn't really work. Being bad enough to get a top 3 pick means your entire team and organization is incompetent and the guy you draft is just going to get his shit pushed while you try to build around him and by the time you ever get good (which may not even happen) he's broken or traded somewhere else.

The Colts got the most slam-dunk prospect in decades with Andrew Luck and he was so sick of taking beatings he retired at 29. The Jags tanked for Lawrence and he has such terrible PTSD from his first few years he's got fumblitis and internal clock issues. The Jets drafted the guy who just won the super bowl at #3, ran him into the ground, decided he wasn't any good, gave him away for nothing then drafted another guy at #2, killed his career, and are now looking to draft another qb whose career they will also kill.

Bad teams make for bad qb situations which means getting a qb with a high pick is often a pyrrhic victory. Even if the guy is actually good a shitty team can drag them down and then you're just repeating the process. You want to rebuild, not bottom out completely

Because then they lose control. No more manufacturing stars, extending series, making sure that the team with the bigger media market wins inflating scoring averages, conveniently coming up on the right side of over / unders....the NBA is too heavily invested in manufactured outcomes to allow shit to just play out fairly. Once you start fraudmaxxing it's hard to stop

>All penalties are 1 FT AND possession

I kind of like this since it takes the piss out of the intentional fouling blight that ruins the end of pretty much every game but at the same time given how constant, nitpicky and imbalanced the foul calls often are I feel like this would inevitably backfire unless the officials also started calling fouls much more conservatively.

Like, can you imagine if SGA got 1 point and possession every time he did his bullshit running into the defender trick? OKC might have the ball for an entire quarter.

The only thing that's actually bad is the viewing experience. Having the games split on like seven different streaming services, the actual NBA platform being nonfunctional dogshit, having unskippable ads on top of ad breaks in the native TV broadcast and ad integrations even while the game is playing is insane. When clicking close on the virus delivering hentai ads on some dude restreaming is less invasive than the actual NBA product that you have to pay money up front for, that's the actual problem. Short term revenue from existing fans while disenfranchising many and completely discouraging anyone new from watching. The weird imbalance in contact allowed between offense and defense and the sudden tolerance of moving screens isn't great, but you'll notice no one in this thread is talking about anything besides muh three pointers muh foul baiting without any actual description of where the fouls are coming from because they aren't watching the games anymore... because the viewing experience itself is fucking ass.

it doesnt even matter what "killed" it because i doubt its ever going to change. the league is obviously never going to get rid of fully guaranteed contracts which is one of the prime culprits of the player empowerment bullshit. but most of all, the league isnt actually experiencing any "death". when they got the $76 billion media deal, i knew all hope was lost. i mean maybe theyll try fucking around with something like the draft lottery but ultimately they dont really need much incentive to change because the massive tv deal shows they are still a popular league and are still making shitloads of money
>>
>>153499373
Don't be a myopic jew. You think anybody is really going to give the NBA that deal ever again? Amazon had an incentive to kill off competition and monopolize every industry it can. What Amazon doesn't realize is that NBA is a joke and only retards still buy the merchandise and go to the games to watch these bums. It's only going to get way worse. Marketing their lazy piece of shit bum "stars" doesn't work in 2026. Nobody gives a fuck about LeBum except little zoomers too stupid to know what a real GOAT looks like

I've been saying for years that overfocusing on superstar QBs was gonna ruin the game long-term. QBs are worthless without hands to deliver the ball to and bodies to give him enough time to actually deliver it.
