This is the "individual" event, they seem to take 1 to 2 hours for the fastest guys. These are mostly "off-piste", they often just mark the way across the mountains with flags, and there's also people pointing where to go when turns aren't obvious. It looks pretty intense, some things I've seen: needing crampons for one of the ascents and even had a fixed rope for anyone who wanted to use it, skiing down terrain littered with boulders or through trees, skiing mogul terrain, skiing down a steep couloir between rock walls, looked like there were some crazy dropoffs at points, avalanche danger being a serious concern. I really hope this is added to the olympics soon, it would be the only event in the winter olympics that takes place on "natural" terrain, including powdery snow (if lucky).Then there's the "vertical" which is literally just uphill for like 30 minutes, this one seems a bit lame to me for ski mountaineering, basically just cross country skiing, though for cross country skiing it's good, might actually be the closest to deathmarch, if only it were a bit longer but that's not really possible since you run out of mountain to go up.
