It's a judged event, so it's obviously fucky
But they do have a set point format for the jumps. A triple axel is better than a double axel, and so on. You know what you get in that regard. A lot of people complain about the sport being too much about crazy jumps than about artistic impression now, and I can somewhat understand that. But it has made the sport more objective for sure
And yet it remains questionable. Judges can easily rig things, primarily because artistic impression remains a big factor

I was poor growing up. I couldn't even afford to play little league baseball. Paying to go ice skating was not something that would have crossed our minds as a possibility for our family.

There are objective measures of the difficulty of the moves they are performing as well as how smoothly they have performed them. So for example if they twist 3 times it's more difficult than if they did it 2 times, and if they land smoothly it's better than if they stumble.
