Why isn't ice hockey popular or relevant in the Olympics? Figure skating mogs it hard as well as several other sports

It's popular in Canada and the US because those are the two countries that win the gold medal most of the time

>ski jumping second, and substantially higher than freeski
I feel like people mixed up ski jumping and big air. Literally nobody watches ski jumping here, and Americans barely even compete in it.
>>
>in America
Who cares? It doesn't reflect what is actually relevant in the Olympics, ice hockey sold the most tickets after biathlon.

The gigantic gender gap in figure skating is far more interesting anyway. Toxic masculinity seems to permeate every single aspect of American society.
>>
Hockey is not really comfy to watch
>>
>>153604529
Those top 5 are 5 of the most boring on offer
>>
>>153604529
crazy to me that biathlon, the best winter sport by far, is apparently so unpopular with Americans
>>
Never cared for figure skating. The women look fake, the music is garbled. The jury can decide who wins. So many red flags
>>
>>153604529
turns out women prefer watching people dancing on ice rather than watching people fighting on ice
or maybe the players should have fucked each other like in that series on netflix or whatever channel it is
>>

This confirms that Americans have pleb taste and shouldn't ever be taken seriously

ski jumping? this cannot possibly be accurate

the only relevant winter Olympic sport is alpine skiing, anything else is just there because they need to fill a two weeks schedule.

There are really only three or four relevant countries in hockey at any given time. Almost every game in the prelims and half of the elimination round are foregone conclusions where some shit team gets the crap beaten out of it by a good team.

Also pros weren't allowed at 2022 and 2018 and so it was literal whos playing instead which sort of damaged its prestige.
>>
>>153604529
>dont care about hockey
>still wins
>>
>>153604529
The real issue is that it's borderline impossible to follow the hockey tournaments at the olympics because of time zone differences. Like the finals today started at 8AM ET and 5AM PT
And because it's a tournament, no one really ends up watching the preliminary games, just the finals

The other events end up happening later in the day and don't take hours just for one event so they're both easier to watch live, and work better for prime time TV viewing
>>
>>153604620

Hockey fatigue... World cup every year, a gazillion smaller cups every year. Same with football.. Fifa is worried for the lack of hype
>>

They are bad at propaganda and their players too because they don't "look athletic" and that's the most important thing in América, looks

>ski-jumping

pretty sure the americans surveyed don't even know what each sport is formally called.
>>
I don't know anything about ice hockey, but team sports with a global professional league and large following shouldn't really be Olympic material. To me soccer or basketball don't belong in the Summer Olympics, for example, which should be mostly about track & field, swimming and niche team sports.

Hockey is too much. Normies would rather watch a more casual winter sport. It's like how girls prefer fit-but-too-fit bodytypes instead of super jacked bodybuilders.

Make love, not war!
>>
>>153604529
i often don't watch it for the same reason I don't watch olympic divegrass, it's garbage youth players usually
this year was an exception. Also there's just no way to make a satisfying format for hockey in 2 weeks, why do you think the NHL does best of 7's
>>
>>153604844

normies are a mistake
>>
>>153604829
I wonder why the sport that didn't have the best players in the world wasn't popular. Really a head scratcher.
>>
This survey is pretty suspect. If ski jumping was actually popular in America NBC would air it in primetime and the sport would probably have some relevant Americans, which it never does. Meanwhile, I know plenty of team sports normies who watch nothing but the hockey in the winter games and don't give a shit about anything else.
>>
>>153604529
Glad to see the only 3 I was interested in watching all made top 3
As for hockey, it was great when the NHL players played but now it's like soccer at the Olympics or the u21 FIFA World Cup
>>
>>153633878
What are you saying retard the game today was mostly all NHL players
>>
>>153604529
Makes it pretty obvious that the average American doesn't realize Big Air/Slopestyle/Halfpipe isn't "Ski Jumping" but instead "Freestyle Skiing." They also clearly don't realize what "Short Track" means, just grouping it together with "Speed Skating" in their response.

The rest I can buy. I know this is 2021 but all the NBC-pushed "main characters" apply to sports in the top half of the list for 2026, too:
>FS: Too many to list, the US FS are shilled HARD, this being #1 is no surprise
>"Ski Jumping" (really Freestyle Skiing): Gu, holy shit it was non-stop with this woman
>"Speed Skating" (including Short Track): Stoddard, Stolz, Leedram
>Bobsleigh: Taylor
>Alpine Skiing: Schiffrin, Vonn
>Snowboard: Kim
>Ice Hockey: It's Ice Hockey

There are almost no personalities of note or coverage for luge, curling, cross country (except, by the end, Klaebo, to a very limited extent), skeleton, biatholon, or nordic combined. True ski jumping also.
>>
>>153604529
Ski jumping? It's boring as shit, why would anyone watch that? I don't even think Americans are good at it.
>>
>>153604529
Anerican interest in hockey is very regional. Outside of the upper Midwest and the Northeast its the 4th sport.

I think they might be including the Ski Aerial jumps, which is the one where you hit a jump then do tricks. That event is super entertaining.

That's just in America, in this Olympics biathlon had the most consistent attendance rate and sold over 200 000 tickets for their events. There were 18 000 people in the stands watching the last mass-start, a norwegian reporter did a segment from location on it.
I don't think biathlon is that popular outside of Europe, but looking at only Europe I think it's in top 5 winter sports by audience popularity. It beats the other ski-sports at least, though maybe not alpine cause I don't know those numbers
>>
>>153604529
SKI JUMPING?

I'm pretty sure we're pretty good at that and I still have ZERO interest in it, but Americans do? WTF. It's so boring, pretty much every jump looks identical.

Also biathlon that far down when it's easily the best sport with so much drama and tension?

Because it is. The NHL objectively has the best players in the world. Sorry it tries to be an actual competition and not just a circlejerk of the richest oil-funded teams like soccer.

I couldn't care less. There's also tv's which allow you to watch in private.

>>153604529
1. Ice hockey and curling are a long tournament over two weeks and have group stages with no elimination until later. This lowers the stakes. Figure skating is two skates, each of equal importance for your chances at a gold medal.

2. I (and americans) can watch hockey at any moment on television. I am a hockey fan who lives in North America. Hockey at the olympics is low down on my list of sports to watch. I can never watch biathlon or slopestyle or cross country, or Figure skating, or short track speed skating on regular cable television. So when I have the opportunity to be gluttonous with my sporting viewing, I will.
