The usage of "Germanic" and "Austrian" pisses me off too much
Also, are there even that many Italians in New York State beyond NYC?

I think it's meant to be ironic/rage bait-y to Germans/Austrians. Though the Longobards and Ostrogoths did rule Northern Italy for a time. Most of the Italian immigrants to the U.S. are from the Southern half of Italy fyi. There's at least a small contingent of paisanos in a surprising amount of urban centers around the U.S. My Italian ancestry is one of the rare ones from up North near Turin. So I can claim a victory no matter what happens tomorrow.

If you have an Italian surname, no.

The troll part is okay, fun even ... but using "Germanic" and "Austrian" like that is just dumb. Austrians are Germans. No point in denying it, even though they live in a different state (lucky bastards). And even if Austrians were not Germans, they'd still be Germanic. And blue eyes aren't a famous Austrian feature ... okay, maybe they are compared to Italians
Thanks for the info!

>Austrians are Germans

In language, yes. But other than that? a lot of other influences.
>>
>>153902407
This applies to every region. They all have influences. Austria has South Slavic influence, the former GDR has West Slavic influence. The very west has some French influence, the north is Scandinavian in some aspects (their dialects are technically closer to the Scandinavian languages than they are to Standard German)
Austria has always been a part of the German sphere. They are Baiern, together with Bavarians proper. Bavarians proper are more similar to Austrians than they are to Franconians in their own state. And the difference between them and people from Kiel or Aachen is obviously much larger still. Germany is a mosaic of different regional cultures, that's what 1000 years of our history is: fragmented small states that at best aligned in some cultural regions. You cannot take Austria out of this equation

Neither historically nor culturally does it make sense to treat Austria as something different than Germany. Language is obviously a factor (if German is their autochthonous language, how can they be not German?), but even politics still confirm it at the end of the day. Not the nation state, but the greater concept. You cannot write German history without Austria, and you cannot write Austrian identity without the concept of Germany. This distinction we're making now is a result of the Austro-Prussian war (back then mostly just called "German (brother) war" in Germany - for a reason), which was a Prussian strategic necessity to get a German nation state in the first place even if it was the "Small German" one instead of the "Large German" one, and the trauma of WW2. That does not override everything. Mozart, Franz Joseph, Karl Renner - they called themselves German despite knowing Austria exists. It's not "either ... or"
If it hadn't been for the Treaty of St Germain, Austria - which called itself "Republic of German Austria" by the way - would have joined the Weimar Republic in 1920, as 99% of the Austrian public was in favor of it
Austria is a separate state, that is to be respected. They are to be envied for not suffering under our government/state. But we are one people. One people consisting of many smaller peoples. There are multiple kinds of Rhinelanders (Ripuarians, Low Franconians, Mosel Franconians), there are Saxonians, there are Swabians, Bavarians, Holsteiners ... and so on ... they're all different, but they're all German. And so are Austrians. They might be the centerpiece, even - if we have such a thing. Good for them that they can survive on their own, but that does not mean they are something entirely different

Sorry for the rant, but I am thoroughly annoyed people pretend there is some magic barrier between us. The differences within federal Germany are much larger than the differences between federal Germany and Austria
