It's not that non-violent. I dare you to visit an average amateur league game. Basketball is less violent, volleyball is less violent, cricket and field hockey are less violent, any non-team sport that isn't martial arts is less violent. I don't know enough about baseball, but it seems less violent as well and is structurally less violent for sure
The thing with football is that it's the most popular sport on the planet and (despite some efforts) very accessible, so you are bound to have some deranged and violent fans just because so many people are involved. When there's a ruckus at a Bundesliga game, the wannabe intellectuals not interested in sports say "oh, look at all these violent football fans" when the amount of people they mean is like 100 in a stadium of 60,000

What teams are older than 1868? The first year of professional baseball was '69. None of the teams from that first season still exist, but the Braves, Phillies, and Cubs were all founded and have existed since 1870 or 71. There's like six English clubs that are older than that, but I wouldn't exactly say that Chesterfield or Notts County are all that popular. Even Forest isn't exactly a Liverpool or Real Madrid.
