Austria does have a proud history, but it obviously always happened in a greater German context. Being German and Austrian is not mutually exclusive, and Austrians knew this better than anyone until 1945 - they went from seeing themselves as the centerpiece of Germany to basing their existence on separation from Germany to warrant a victim status as opposed to that of a culpritThis is not an issue of nation states, the German peoples are much older than nation states. The separation between the Federal Republic of Austria and the Federal Republic of Germany is obvious (and they are the lucky ones for not being part of this nation state), but there is no meaningful difference between the people living there respectively. Austrians have a hard time accepting this. But their national pride is all the more necessary to keep the act going. They have the House of Habsburg, Mozart and Haydn, and so on. It's partially retroactively constructed, but a lot of great things did happen in what is now Austria, and they are right to be proud of that. Personally, I'd just wish for them to say the rest out loud, that being: it's all German. This doesn't take anything away from Austria, far from it
