I know nothing about Hockey either but if everybody's together like that they can get passed pretty easily and the goalie will be left alone.
Also you want people spread out to do long passes that dazzle the opponent. if you're all bunched up like that then who the fuck do you pass the puck to? The guy next to you?

team gb did it with their one NHL guy, what your describing is assuming even distribution of talent which often isn't the case
