FUCK Libby out for a duck, cleaned up by some 18 yo

Captained Sibley in my fantasy team and he's out cheaply too, the first 10 minutes have been an absolute DISASTER today

On a positive note, this Lategan really does look like the real deal (as predicted by me pre-season)

yh i saw that and explains why they didn't put up any highlights on their youtube channel. seems like a pretty silly move, hopefully it won't mean the start of all the counties doing it.

Wonder if it means they'll stop other counties putting up highlights of their matches away at Lancs.

Don't know why in this country as soon a a kid does something sports wise they immediately get hyped to fuck?

Ben McKinney has only been a automatic select for Durham for one season, he averaged low 30s and they got relegated. But he scores one century against Aus A and everyone is creaming their knickers over him and saying he has to be a pick for the Test side despite having Crawley tier stats and being another technically flawed player.

Has also played domestically in South Africa though, so maybe still has allegiances there
Guess there's still quite a way to go before thinking about international cricket though

I don't think he really "deserves" to be in contention, as you said he has to demonstrate consistent form which he hasn't got yet. English cricket just likes "get rich quick schemes", which is why they burn out "the next thing" young players as quickly as they appeared on the scene, especially the current regime.

>>154255006
"Deserves" in the sense that there's not too many strong contenders, so his fairly average average is still enough to put him in contention. He's young and has a fairly high strike rate, whereas the more established openers on the county circuit (Sibley, Hameed) are older and slower. So he's really just up against middle-order contenders who try to become openers (Rew, Ahmed, Cox) or a few other young openers with comparable records (Haines, Tribe, Gay).
>>
>high strike rate
stupid metric to judge on when he hasn’t scored that many runs. I know the current set up do judge on SR but it’s retarded, especially for an opener.
>Sibley
>old
people keep regurgitating this, but he is only 30.
>Hameed
Scored with a SR of 58 last season.

At then end of the day Sibley and Hameed were the top two run scorers in Div. 1 with over 1200 runs each at over 60. Whilst McKinney scored less than half that at 30. So SR really doesn’t matter.

I don’t think Rew, Ahmed or Cox are or should be up for consideration as openers seeing as they never play as openers in the Championship and there’s no suggestion that they are going to try to reposition themselves as ones. Ahmed played a lot at three last season and Rew and Cox have always played solidly middle order. If you don’t open for your county then you shouldn’t open for England. Again “bazball” England try playing people out of position with the likes of Dan Lawrence, and it doesn’t work. Besides Cox and Rew are both keepers and Ahmed is still an all-rounder, so going after the openers spot would probably mean ditching those other roles. Might be an option for Jamie Smith who doesn’t even keep in the championship, but then Surrey wouldn’t want to break up the Sibley-Burns partnership anytime soon.

Haines and Gay both have significantly more experience than McKinney and are both in their mid- to late-20s. Haines only has a career average at about 38, so does Gay although his last two seasons have been good and better than that. Tribe is still too inexperienced, even less FC matches than McKinney, has only played 1 and a half seasons, so it’s worth waiting to see if he can keep producing the results he’s been having.
>>
>>154261679
Yeah I agree with most of that desu, but I'm just trying to look at it from the perspective of the retarded bazball administration. If it were up to me, I'd give Sibley another chance. If they're insistent on sticking with the bazball method, then I'd probably try out Smith as opener so that Rew can come in at 6 and also take the gloves. Not sure who I'd opt for at 3 thoughever, that's the other problem position.
>>
>>154261772
Bethell is going to be an automatic for 3 after the Ashes, same as Root and Brook are auto-picks for 4 and 5. If it wasn’t for that I’d be tempted to say try Duckett at 3.

Honestly don’t think Smith is that good, technically flawed and lacks bottle. But he’ll still be an automatic pick.

I was going to do a post on openers so far in the championship but I thought I might leave it until after every county has played 3 matches.

Bit of a dodgy one for Essex this, looks set to be a draw but there is an outside chance of a win.

Reckon the only chance if they posted a lead of about 180 and gave Surrey just the whole final session it could help force a win, reckon it has to be that much if the pitch doesn't start really wear and hasn't become a lots less batter friendly .

Either way just need to hope no batting collapse again.

Both the Glamorgan and Yorkshire games are stone draws, and Surrey will likely be as well unless Essex baz it or Surrey take 9 wickets in the afternoon session.

The two div 2 matches will both be a result, and Warks-Notts a likely one as well.

Of the top 10 English test run scorers:
1st JE Root (6' 0")
2nd AN Cook (6' 2")
3rd GA Gooch (6' 0")
6th KP Pietersen (6' 4")
8th MA Atherton (6' 0")
10th MC Cowdrey (not listed, but said to be the same height as Wally Hammond; 6' 3". Hammond is the 11th all time England run scorer and finished with a much higher test average)
Only one genuine manlet in Ian Bell.
>>
kp and gooch the only good ones listed
>>
Essex need to push up the RR if they want to give a good lead to declare on. But then I doubt that will be Westleys intention.
>>
6' really pushing the definition of 'tall'
I'm 6'2" and I barely consider myself tall, on the upper end of average at school at bottom 50% of men at work
>>
>most self-aware big strong australian
>>
but that english list is surprising I guarantee that if you re-run it for any non-asian nation you get manlet after manlet
>>
>>154403056
Root and Hammond both have much better averages, 51.1 and 58.5, than either of those (47.3 and 42.6). Even Boycott has a better average than KP.
>>154403095
I don't think so, I would say most are probably just normal height with odd shortarse and lanklet in the mix. Like Lara yes a manlet, but then someone like Viv Richards, no and Clive Lloyd certainly not.

Then you have to remember that average height was shorter in the past when talking about legacy players from the pre-war era.
>>
australia
>1. Ponting 1.78m (think this is wrong as he's famously short, I met him once and was shocked)
>2. Border 5'9"
>3. S. Waugh 5'10"
>4. Steven Peter Devereux "Meme Shit" Smith 5'9"
>5. Warner 5'10"
>6. Clarke 5'10"
>7. Hayden 6'2"
>8. M. Waugh 6'
>9. Langer 5'8"
>10. Taylor 5'10"

So only Hayden for Australia, and we're taller on average than brits.

>>154403145
apparently 5' 10" which I'm surprised at, but which is in the average range, my "point was he was not a manlet
>>
yes I'm not talking about kruger van wyks here but plainly tall works against a batsman
>>
I guess its because once you get above a certain height it becomes a bit more difficult to get your bat down. Still I wouldn't describe most of these >>154403143 even jokingly as shortarses even by Australian standards.

my theory has always been that shorter batsmen have a smaller "good length" zone since where it bounces is really a reflection of where the ball passes their body
if youre shorter in stature then what would be in the good length zone for a taller batsman is now too short

There's some huge article on the BBC about Gay but it passes over the fact he "was" an opener and now doesn't. Another "get rich quick Rodders" player all because he's had two good matches his season.

For Northants where he opened:
2022: 825 @ 33.0 in D1
2023: 589 @ 34.6 in D1
2024: 919 @ 57.4 in D2

Since joining Durham where he has mostly batted 3.
2024: 100 @ 33.3 in D1
2025: 954 @ 45.4 in D1
2026: 344 @ 86.0 in D2

Still would be a better choice than Crawley or McKinney though tbf
