Put some respect on their names. We wouldn't have the beautiful game we have today without their foresight.

They all still exist today, except one.

For me, it’s Preston North End

I live near Preston, it’s a paki shithole, I don’t know why we abandoned the city to them
>>
>>154250561
The true invincibles.

>paki shithole

Yeah the countryside is pretty white, my home village is white, once a black guy came into the pub and people left their homes to come down to the pub to look at him

What went wrong with Accrington FC? All the other clubs still exist except them.

>Approximately 720 men from the Accrington Pals went into action on 1 July; 585 men became casualties, 235 killed and 350 wounded in about half an hour. The battalion's commander, Lieutenant-Colonel A. W. Rickman, was among the wounded. A rumour spread around Accrington that only seven men had survived from the battalion, and an angry crowd surrounded the mayor's house and demanded information.
Much smaller town than the others and most of the men died in WW1

holy GRIM
well what's Notts County's excuse? they're the only other team there who arguably failed to make use of their early mover advantage.

Deserved for fighting the central powers.

Nottingham is a big city and county. Accrington is a small town surrounded by bigger towns

Misread your post sorry. I guess they got superseded by Nottingham forest. They notts county were pretty solid team but became pretty poorly managed i think

If I woke up and Accrington Stanley were a championship team (not even PL) I think I’d have a panic attack as clearly I moved to another world

This was in the 1880s, we've already lost the player generation of the 1950s. The last player of the 1954 World Cup final died a few years ago already
Recently, Jose Santamaria died a few weeks short of 97. He ended his career in the mid-60s. There's only a tiny handful of relevant players his age who are still alive. If you want to look at the oldest somewhat represented generation of players, you have to look at the 70s. And even that is beginning to look scary: Cruyff is long since dead, Beckenbauer and Gerd Müller died a few years ago, and so on.

Can't believe countries used to send every man from a village into war together. How did people not realize how fucking stupid that would be after one time this happens?

Sir Bobby Charlton died after he had a fall and knocked his head on a radiator in his nursing home. Sad way to go.

>>154253011
The teams listed all played in a European cup, predecessor to the CL.
>>
>>154258977
>World Cup final 1954: all dead since 2021
>World Cup final 1958: all dead since 2024
>World Cup final 1962: Brazil still has 3 (1 who actually played the final), the Czechoslovakian team has 2 remaining (0 who played the final)
>World Cup final 1966: Germany still has 9 alive (4, Schulz, Weber, Overath, Held), England 3 (1, Hurst)

A shame ... but what can you do?

>>154259120
Oh, that sucks indeed. :(

Uwe Seeler (captain of Germany 1966, among other things) died in 2022 after years of seeing his club reduced to a total joke, relegated, and without seeing them get promoted again (his outspoken wish) since they always choked in the most pathetic fashion. When they finally did it right last year, I couldn't help but think of him. Surely tons of fans of the club did, he's the club personified. If there's a heaven, he was having a good time that day
It's sad to think we're inevitably losing all these people from what some call the plumber era, an arguably "nobler" age of football, before everyone was a millionaire flexing their wealth, before everything was commercialized to death, before players started changing clubs every four years on average, before most leagues became so lopsided that you can pretty much guess the champion years in advance

It wasn't really a problem before the American Civil War. Before industrialized war most death in a war were from disease.

Plus guys really wanted to serve together with their bros.

>The Sullivans enlisted in the US Navy on January 3, 1942, with the stipulation that they serve together. In mid-1942, the Navy promulgated a policy of separating siblings, but this was not strictly enforced. George and Frank had served in the Navy before, but their brothers had not. All five were assigned to the light cruiser USS Juneau.

>Later that day, as it was leaving the Solomon Islands' area for the Allied rear-area base at Espiritu Santo with other surviving US warships from battle, the force was located by the submarine I-26, which fired two torpedoes at the crippled heavy cruiser USS San Francisco. While they both missed their intended target, one hit Juneau. The torpedo likely hit the thinly armored light cruiser at or near the ammunition magazines, and the ship was blown in half and quickly sank in a fiery explosion.[7]

>Eight days after the sinking, ten survivors were found by a PBY Catalina search aircraft and retrieved from the water. The survivors reported that Frank, Joe and Matt were all killed instantly, Al drowned the next day, and George, the eldest, survived for four or five days, before he climbed over the side of the raft he had occupied and fell into the water. He was never seen or heard from again.
